A question on broadband service

I have been looking at the various broadband providers for my area (as a returning expat I'll need it) and I had assumed that if they all use the same telephone line the speed of service would be the same. This is not the case as it ranges from 2mbs to 5.5mbs ( I've used my neighbours telephone number as I don't have one.)

I've been away too long, but could someone explain why there is such a variance.

fixed rate adsl, adsl max, adsl2, adsl2+, cable.....
various technologies with differing speeds, not all of which are available everywhere (i can have fixed or max, not cable or adsl2(+)

this link is availabilty of adsl if its adsl2/llu then you can probably expect an increase but not always.
Best thing to do is contact isp and get them to check.
It is going to become manditory for isps to give you an accurate speed check and most ips are doing so now.
