House prices and taxes

What this thread is missing is a considered list of all the crucial tasks undertaken by local councils:
1.Bins
2.Planning
3.Roads
4.Er that's it
Sorry I know there's loads of other essential stuff I've missed - anyone care to expand...
You forgot housing single mothers with six kids from 4 fathers in 7 bedroom mansions.
You also forgot allowing children to die at the hands of abusers because the council knows best.
You also forgot generally wasting as much cash as is humanly possible on any cause that isn't helping the decent people who actually pay council tax.0 -
the millions paid in salaries and bonuses to the former compared to a fraction of that to the latter - that I can't see why you place such a stress on the latter.
Well we actually agree in a roundabout way.
The OP was talking tax and council salaries, so that how I answered...
Now its moved on...0 -

I have seen you oblivious to other people taking offence at something you write, and often thought they were exaggerating. But maybe I was wrong. You don't even seem to read, let alone re-read, what you write.
A good GP is supposed to be on £104K. see http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/7671701.stm
The council executives are on £200K. I don't think double is cheap. Although, maybe we would agree that they should both be trimmed down.
You are right in the sense that you are lucky, as am I, compared to many.
But as someone who wants price to fall from ridiculous levels;
I don't understand why you cannot see the link with salaries...city bonuses fuelled the London boom, didn't they?
Of course some people will always earn more, it not that per se which is the problem. Its the differential, that has been growing exponentially it appears; the gap between top and bottom is getting too wide.
I hope the recession brings that gap back a bit towards sane levels, just like house prices.
I do agree with you on the last bit - please see my post just above that crossed with yours.
Try not to be offended - no offence was meant, to you or anyone else - I just argue passionately for what I believe.0 -
Must try not to cross post!0

the reason why people don't revolt over the ever increasing and punitive council tax is because they can't. the trendies, led by ben elton and tommy sheridan and their ilk rioted over the poll tax (which was actually fairer than this council tax).
they longed for labour to come in and save the world, but all they did is fleece us. They are money grabbing scum and the waste is horrendous. It would be embarrassing to complain against labour.
when the tories get in, following their historic landslide victory in May 2010 (as the usurper barnacle will cling on as long as possible) they should cut the public workers by AT LEAST 50%
non-job wastes of space the lot of them.0 -
the private sector creates wealth and therefore anyone who works in it, should be paid whatever their company can afford.
public sector workers on the other hand are simply waste. paid for by the wealth creating private sector. no public worker should be paid more than 40k. they are just cost. they provide no value. and they are overrun by hateful screaming liberals.0 -
Top post Carol, It is the green eyed envy monster, it escapes from its cage every now and again
Over a million people cannot afford their council tax. Many pensioners have to go hungry and cold to pay council tax. Taxes are driving businesses to other parts of Europe.
Do our public servants care? In your case, apparantly not. Your only reaction is "Its the green eyed envy monster". The only bit you left out was 'I'm alright Jack'.0 -

That's an argument possibly for greater council tax benefits for pensioners - although given that many pensioners are very equity rich if cash poor, I'm not sure how 'fair' it is for the average waged but priced out FTB's to be supporting those currently choosing to stay on in their 5 bedroom houses (my parents, for example, in case you think I'm getting at other people here).0 -

Ooops, certainly did not mean to thank!
Do you really believe what you write here, or you just a screaming troll?
How many more baby P's need to die before you can see that council workers who do their jobs WELL are invaluable?
What private sector job is as important or vital as providing healthcare, education, social services etc? And do you really live in the cloud-cuckoo land where all these could just administer themselves?0 -
Director of Parking Services!
Do you think you have to do a reverse park as a practical test at the interview?
No, you have to break off the interview to nip downstairs and give someone having a heart attack on a yellow line a ticket....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0
