I would not touch Panasonic crap with a barge pole.

They use DVD RAM which cannot be used in any other DVD recorder.

    DVD+R/RW is much better system.

You have just said the most stupid remarks I've ever seen on any forum anywhere, anytime. I hope you take the medicine before they let you out next time.
    Nice to save.

Having lurked around here for a while, I was driven to register to respond to this post. Not only was it very rude, but "talkshop", your earlier post was also ignorant and wrong.

DVD-ram is a very sophisticated recording system with significant benefits above dvd+r/+rw.

Maybe you should become a little more knowledgeable before you post such drivel

    :p

Move on? To a format that doesn't have timeslip? Surely that is moving backwards?

You do know why the DVD+ format was created don't you? It was created by a group of companies to avoid paying licences to the DVD forum (who created the original DVD format, as well as DVD-R/RW). That is why the DVD+ logo does not contain the normal DVD logo. There is no technical superiority to the + format over -.

DVD-RAM may be older, but it is far, far better for everyday recording (because of timeslip and longer disk life). For compatibility DVD-R/RW is better. There are no real advantages to + at all.

    :T

Well said. The Currys deal is a bargain and if it suits your needs then i'd go for it.

    Otherwise don't worry

Wrong, the advantages of DVD-Ram are just dawning on folks in this part of the world, unlike in technically savvy Japan where it is the only thing customers want to buy.
You will see more versions on the market in future, as customers become to realise cheapest is not always best.
eg the only RAM recorder available for computers for years has been the LG ones, suddenly joined by Pioneer and NEC in the last few months.

Why so? if your argument is right

DVD - RAM effectively converts an ordinary dvd recorder into a pvr, with an effectivly removable hard drive, admittedly not very large by itself, but limitless in reality.

In the beginning.............. there was dvd-r, invented in the far east, then european Philips wanted a piece of the action and invented dvd+r, just to be different and thus get a toe/foothold in the market.

A bit like a re-run of VHS vs Beta

DVD+RW is still the better format.

£2 for a dinosaur RAM disc when you can get a DVD+RW for 50p or less.

I know which I will be using :D

One thing that I'm not sure about is the fact that it doesn't have a built in TV tuner.

I don't know if I can get freeview, but I am prepared to risk that.

Trouble is that if I can't then I assume that I won't be able to record another channel to the one that I am watching unless I keep my Vcr and use the tuner in that?

    Is this correct anyone?

I also assume that it is possible to copy non Pre-recorded DVDs using existing dvd player and to copy all Vids to DVD.

    Anyone?
It has both a freeview tuner and an analogue tuner, but only one at a time can be used.

Yes you can copy DVDs that aren't protected by playing from your DVD player into this machine i.e. ones recorded on a DVD camcorder.

Yes you can copy videos that you've recorded yourself.
Why pay more than you have to?

Well this DVD recorder supports DVD-RAM, DVD-R, DVD-RW and DVD+R. The only format is doesn't support is DVD+RW.

As DVD+RW is not superior to DVD-RW, and is less compatible then I don't see this as a particular problem.

Also, DVD-RAM is by far the best format for day-to-day recording as it is the only format which supports timeslip (watching a programme which is still recording). Plus the disks have a far longer lifespan.

I think LSD was just shocked at how rude you were considering you don't have a clue what you're on about... :rotfl:

You hit the nail on the head.
    Nice to save.
