Giving a dog cod liver oil or something similar

Cassy is 5.5 years old and if she has been sitting or lying down for any length of time, her back leg is a bit stiff when she gets up again. Is it okay to give her cod liver oil? Was thinking I would just add it to her food each day?

i used to give my puppy cod liver oil. he loved it. would let me give it him straight off the spoon!
What matters most is how well you walk through the fire
  • Cod liver oil is great for dogs mine loves it,but also try glucosamine for joint pain and stiffness, very good as dogs get older.

I give my lab half a teespoon of cod liver oil a day plus he gets joint aid daily. I was amazed to discover that he loves the taste of the coder liver oil!

My dog did that all his life, he would come running when I shouted "codly oil" to him.

  • Hi there ... the best thing in the world for animals who seem to be getting stiff, or have mobility problems, is a powder called Runaround.
It's from a company called Doghealthdotcodotuk (if you google them, you will find them!) ... I'm sorry, I don't know if you're supposed to put links up or not, so apologies if not and I will hold my hand out for a slap!

Nope, I don't work for them .. *L* .. but ALL my doggies have had this stuff, from my old greyhounds I used to have to a little 4lb chihuahua and it is great. It contains green lipped mussel, shark cartilage and other goodies and within a week you see a difference.

One of my old greyhounds actually broke his leg .. well, I say broke, he shattered it and ended up with plates and pins in it bless him, but even though he had bad arthritis, this stuff had him belting round like a puppy again and we lost him through something else not related to his leg.

I have given all my dogs it on a bit of buttered bread and they have been fine taking it, and would have no hesitation recommending it to anyone. I believe they do it for cats too!!

The only dog I have now is a 2 yr old chihuahua, but as soon as he starts to show any signs of stiffness or mobility problems, then I shall get him onto it straightaway. It really is fab to see what it does for them, so do look it up because even when your doggie gets to the point where it looks like you need daily meds, do try it ... it really helps them!!

If you google it, you will find all kinds of comments on sites about folks who have given it to their dogs and it has helped even the worst cases!
  • i second that glucosamine is good - it is now prescried to humans for arthritis, ask your vet about the dosage, but its cheap enough from the chemist

Pets @ home sell bottles of cod liver oil specifically for pets. The one we buy is approx £6 a bottle but get staff discount on our purchases as nephew works there.

  • Hi There!
We have a ridgeback and a German Shep :)
We give them 'vitamins' every morning and they love it so much that they have learnt the word 'vitamins' and get very excited when we say it :)

We give them Salmon Oil from 'Hennes Pet Foods' online :) Its a great place to buy from, and the more you buy the more you save! Great with delivery too when weve used them. You can find the product we buy here:

Thank you all for your answers. Was just thinking of a human value brand rather than one specifically for pets but was worried about the effect on the rear end! IYKWIM! Don't know if she would take capsules, so liquid would be easier. Do give her and the cats tins of sardines occasionally, so that must help a bit too.
