  • The recipes in my breadmaker book all use cups and spoon measurements - very easy! Tesco's strong bread flour is only 45p a bag at the moment.

  • Hi all, been considering making my own bread for a while now (cost reduction). Is it cheaper to make your own - I realise it makes a difference what bread you currenly use as to the price of it, but on the whole is it any cheaper ?

not sure if it's always necessarily cheaper, especially for me as I use Waitrose Organice flour and that's about £1.10 a bag, however to me it's all about knowing what's going into my bread - tiny amounts of salt and sugar and no additives. The BM is very cheap to run - I think someone said that on a 5 hour bake, it's 10p or something :D and it makes my kitchen smells nice :p

There was a thread last year about the cost implications and someone worked it out that it was quite a bit cheaper even taking into account the electricity, but I can't remember what sort of flour they were using. Personally I use Waitrose own brand ordinary white and wholemeal flours and never have a problem with them - I think the wholemeal is about 99p and the white about 75p so the organic isn't much more. For me I'd rather have a quality homemade loaf with no additives and if it's cheaper than shop bought, even better;) .

    - 4- mashed bananas (use ripe ones)
    - 1 cup sugar (you can use less)
    - 2 large eggs
    - 1/2 cup vegetable oil
    - 2 cups white flour-I use bread flour
    - 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
    - 1 teaspoon baking soda (bicarb)
    - 1/2 teaspoon salt
    - 1 teaspoon vanilla (optional)
    - 1/2 cup nuts (this is just an option, you can also add cinnamon or something else my favourite is mixed spice)

Mix the oil eggs and sugar-throw in the rest of the ingredients-stir-put on the fast loaf setting which on the Panny is 2 hours

    Enjoy :)

Isn't it strange how we all find different, I have the SD255, and find I have to add extra water to make it work. I also bought the Allinsons tin of yeast before I read on here it didnt work for a load of you, it seems fine to us, and still going strong over 6 months later (not large bread eaters). I use a mixture of strong white flour, strong brown flour (when I can find it!) and strong wholemeal flour, varing quatities depending on what lands in when I shake the bag, as long as I m within a couple of grams of the total flour weight. We like the 5 seeded loaf which is why I opted for the 255 as it adds them in if I am not about. DS loves it too, and he and the GF made one over NY when they were home and we were away for a day or so. He says it last so much longer than shop bread without going off, even though we don't add preservatives.

Enjoy your Panny or BM, don't worry about it and it will be fine.

Why is it I have less time now I am retired then when I worked?
  • HI, new here too but just wanted to say I have a bread maker and SOOOO wouldn't be without it. Try adding oats, wheatgerm and seeds too! I find the blocks of Doves yeast from lakeland good value :T
