Can we claim any benefits?

Would some kind person tell me if and how I can apply for any benefits. I live in a private rented house with my eldest daughter who is 22. We are both job hunting.
Me - I have just used up the last of my savings. Have been raising my children for the last few years and haven't worked recently although I did work full time for 15 years, years ago.
My daughter has been working since September 2007, but has just lost her job. She has over £16,000. in savings.
Will we get allowed and benefits until we can find jobs?
Thanks
Kerry

Is it a joint tenancy or do you rent it and sublet a room to her?0

Thanks you for your reply. The tenancy is in my name.0

Your daughter may be entitled to JSA based on her NI contributions and you should be able to claim Income based JSA, you should both make a claim via the Jobcentre (you'll find the telephone number on their website but be prepared for a long wait they are v busy!), you should also make a claim for Housing beneift and council tax bneeift, do it tomorrow as they will not back date it so every day counts! If your daughter gets JSA Contriubtory benefit it won't be affected by her savings.

Thanks for taking the time to reply Sam
Will my daughter's saving affect the claim for housing benefit as she has over £16k? The tenancy is in my name, will that make a difference?
Will the landlord or agent have to be told about any housing benefit claim as when we moved in 2 years ago, the landlord didn't want anyone on DSS.
The council tax is paid up, up to April, so I'm not really bothered about a claim for that yet.0 -

I have found the answer to the above, just in case anyone else wanted to know.
1 -This will reduce the amount of LHA (housing) but not by much. About £7 less per week it seems like at the moment.
2 -The landlord will be told as they need to confirm that the claimant has a rental agreement.
3 -Council Tax will be recredited towards next years bill for the weeks I claim.
Also - Claims start the Monday after you put the forms in.
Thanks to those that gave me help.

Also, as I am a part time student, the government will pay the cost of my course fees while I am claiming housing benefit and council tax. Which is great for me as this is the final year of my maths degree and the most expensive course.

landlord does NOT need to know , there is a box to tick in the application form to to say you dont want your landlord contacted. They only need to contact the ll if you dont have tennancy agreement/ rent book.
Also claims start on the day you get the forms.0 -

My council have their own form and there wasn't anywhere on the form to tick to say that I didn't want the landlord contacted.
I just checked their online form again. I do have a rental agreement which has now rolled over to a periodic agreement and my bank statements show that the rent is coming out each month.
Would you give me a link to government guidelines on this please.0
