online virus scan crashes computer - please help

ok Thomas, i'll try a full scan. thank you so much for your help with this.
a few years ago i was really up to date (scared IT bods at my uni by taking apart and fixing a laptop!) but computer's have moved so quickly and i'm really just a historian!

I don't see anything in the log
Please follow this combo fix guide http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix make sure all anti-virus and antis-pwayre is disabled as it may interfere. After its finished post the logfile back here.

Do this after running combo fix you need to install a anti-virus i recommend http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/

You need to goto WINDOWS UPDATE and download SERVICE PACK 3 as your computers at risk as it is

i hope that you dont see anything is a good thing!

i will have to wait to do the combofix as my printer is up the spout so i cant print out the instructions as it says to do and it seems a bit long for me to remember. i'll try and print them at my fella's work!

thank you for telling me this. i thought windows did that sort of thing automatically, so after the recent windows scare thingy i'm glad you've said i need to do something.

um, that's what i'm hoping for. i recently joined their internet banking and am waiting for a code thingy. i hope kaspersky is good and doesnt make my computer too slow!

You can save the instructions into a notepad file instead of printing them out :P

Its supposed to. But service packs (Particularly number 3) are notorious for problems and can take upto an hour to install so lots of people tend to not give the computer time to install. Sometimes other running programs stop it too etc.

very happily, the barclays code thingy came and i was able to download Kaspersky. it found occurances of adware called Orange3 that it didnt like and zapped. Kaspersky said i needed to download updates for Office, so i did what it said and now its happy. It did take hours and hours to do a full scan, and anoyingly just stopped at 89% so maybe thats the same as what was holding up the internet virus scan?

Rik - i have now downloaded Service Pack 3 and everything seems better!

Thomas - thanks for the heads up on using notepad, very sensible. i'll do the bleepingcomputer thing you recomended tomorow.

THANK YOU ALL - somewhere in this mamouth sort out something has stopped internet explorer crashing regulary - i should know as the computer has been on since 10 this morning when the postman came and brought me the barclays code - and IE's not crashed once! woo ha! :T :T

i'll cary on with the rest of the advice and hopefully i can do a full scan without crashing. THANKYOU !!
