hi, i read lots of good info on here and decided to scan my computer using a web based tool to check for nasties as it seems a bit slow and internet explorer has started to just close on me for no reason that i can see.
i do need to update my antivirus but am waiting for barclays code to get the good free one with them.
so i tried to use housecall but it just stops during the initial 'system update' bit so in the end i closed the browser widow. tried this 3 times.
then i tried Panda and after 3 hours it almost finished then stopped and the computer totally crashed. not impressed. it had said it had found 59 things that needed 'immunising' but no serious problems. as it just crashed, i have no idea what they were.
can anyone please offer any advice as to why these programes are crashing on my machine?
i have broadband, Internet Explorere 7, Windows Firewall and firewall in router, outdated virus 'protection', and a wireless connection that is pretty good right now (no network connection last week). i am careful what i download/view/install but realise something could have gotten in.

hmm you may be infected with some sort of malware download this http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php then install it then run a quick scan and remove everything which is found then post the log file back here.
I would of just posted the guide but some people find it offensive :rotfl:
Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.- Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
- Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
- When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
- When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Then click Finish.
- MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from hereand just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
- On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
- If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
- The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
- When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
- Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
- Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
- Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
- When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
- The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
- Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Run Malwarebytes as Tom has suggested (Though I suggest aFULL scan)
Post the log here so we can see what it deleted
Then download HIJACK THIS
http://www.download.com/Trend-Micro-HijackThis/3000-8022_4-10227353.html
SCAN and post the log
So we can see whats running on your computer

:T Thanks - appreciate the advice. i just saw the thread on posting 'nicely' and wondered what the malware thing was about/for, so i can say i'm thankful you introduced it so politely:rotfl: as now i know it may be of use with my problem.
