I take the viewpoint that people do not want a lecture on whats wrong but how to fix their computer quickly.

But cant that be combined with a bit of explanation and 'warmth' !

For the record. When I very first posted on here, all I got was maybe 3 or 4 guys taking the p*ss about something they hadnt even tried for themselves (And still havnt to this day as far as I can tell)

But to be honest, whilst I too was expecting this site to be a little bit friendlier, it was like water off a ducks back with me as ive seen it all on forums. THIS one is very tame compared to some believe me.

The only thing that gets my back up is when people talk down to the posters who ask questions like theyre superior beings or something. But again, its online, what can you do.........

if they got to techy i said im sorry but youve lost me and they came back and broke it down in to even simpler terms until between us all we got rid of the little blighter than was bugging my machine
    i was a very grateful mse'er

however my daughter - who caused the inital problem - then went and split a beaker of juice over the machine a few weeks later and completely killed it !!!!

    haha

I bet your daughter got a roasting that day :p

Is she still alowed drinks near the computer?

I think one of the problems is that we dont know sometimes how 'techie' the OP is to start with. I once went into detail about 'how' and 'why' and they took the p*ss as they knew all about it anyways and just wanted a second opinion. Its why I keep mine basic so I can soon find out where we all stand.

out of interest , the Malware sticky

    http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.html?t=133269

has been updated with the Malwarebytes text , I will now only point to that thread and tell them to follow the text in post 2

if you read my posts in replies I often try gently to point out why the infection occured , ie:-

you are running with an out of date version of Windows

    you have no antivirus

your kids have been downloading using P2P (amazing how many of them don't know what they are doing or downloading)

    you have no real firewall

somethimes there is no obvious cause

I don't think a day goes by without seeing several copied and pasted answers whatever the problem might be.

Whatever happened to explaining what is wrong, and how to stop it happening again? Prevention is better than cure afterall.

    Just a thought ;):D

    A brave post!

Well done for sticking your head above the parapet, with the associated risks. ;)

There are a few people on here whose advice I always read and try to digest.

Then there are the others who seem to present the same copy/paste solution to every problem, even if it's an apparent hardware problem.

"Well we need to see what's running on your system"

The latter are appearing as experts, due to the polished copy/paste reply, especially
to poor non-techies who've wandered over for a bit of advice.
Whatever happened to explaining what is wrong, and how to stop it happening again?
The thing is,the second group just don't know, but like to shine in the reflected glory of the true experts.
The test is when a follow up question is asked, standard reply is "your antivirus/firewall is carp replace it with xxxx (this weeks favourite)"

Many times I could perhaps pass myself off as an expert by the copy/paste method, but chose not to, perhaps it's me, I'm just not comfortable with pretending to be something I'm not.
    Move along, nothing to see.

    Who has been banned?

It is completely and utterly impossible to ban someone from a forum.

Ban the username? They register another.
Block their IP address? If they're on a dynamic IP they merely log off and back on their internet connection. If they're on static IP, they use a proxy server or Tor.

Banning is therefore completely and utterly pointless because the people you want to ban tend to not be technically inept, have a clue how the internet and forums work and how to get around it in a couple of mouse clicks.

    Hence I'm still here.
