I have just renewed my car tax at the Post Office for the next twelve months. When I got home I realised the cashier had given the original "demand" from the DVLA back to me with my receipt stapled to it. Is this correct? How will DVLA know I have paid up?

That is correct. They will have scanned the barcode. I queried this the first time it happened to me but all was well.

It's all this new fangled technology. But clearing a cheque will still take 3 - 9 days! and transferring money between banks or even between accounts of the same bank is still a nightmare !!

11 years ago in Hong Kong transferring money to your friends account was easily done at the cashpoint machine. in less than 4 minutes.

just get your road tax online now, http://www.vehiclelicence.gov.uk/EvlPortalApp/ though i think you need the new style MOT to do this though

I looked into that, you need a new style MOT and you need to have had your insurance unchanged for "a while" certainly not less than say 2 - 3 weeks.

Do you know what the window is between MOT being done and taxing online? I stupidly have my tax and MOT due on the same day and although I always get the MOT done a month in advance, I am wondering whether that is early enough for the system to pick it up and for me to be able to tax online and get the disc in time.

I imagine it is almost immediate. However don't panic, you can tax your car in the first month after expiry and you won't be penalised. Unless plod sees your car on the road.

I wouldn't drive it without a tax disc anyway but as my office and car park are only a few doors away from the local police station it would be extra foolish to risk it.

I would never recommend driving a car with no tax weather it's only just ran out or not, All it takes is you to drive passed a roadside scanner and bang your fined. No questions asked.

Yes, it is the same when you re Tax your car with a car tax reminder.
Then cashier will scan the bar code on the letter you have, either a reminder or a demand in your case, then this will provide her with the details to tax and issue your disc.

Once you have paid, this information will be updated on to the DVLA records.

The cashier will give you your receipt back with your letter/reminder.

As for the MID, the MID can take anything from 24 hours to 7 Days to update and show on the MID as insured from the date of the insurance policy starting.

However, if you did get stopped by the Police for not being shown on the MID database within such time, a simple call from them to your insurance company at the side of the road should set the record correct :)
