Jumble Sales?

They used to have a massive one near us when I was little but where I am now, it is about an hour's drive to find one. We used to get such good bargains, because people were not so aware of what things were worth like they are now.
Always used to find money on the floor too. :jNo you're not a vegetarian if you eat any animal or fish, so do not insult genuine veggies by calling yourself one!
Thanks to everyone who posts competitions. You are the stars of the board :T:j:T0 -
Jumble sales aren't what they used to be - years ago I used to go to 3 or 4 each weekend and get some really good, interesting things, but now I haven't seen one advertised near here for a long time; the last one was about 2 years back and consisted of tatty paperbacks, a few rusty pots and pans and awful clothes - I think Ebay, car boot sales and Freecycle have 'killed' them!"I'm ready for my close-up Mr. DeMille...."0

Those aren't what I would class as jumble sales. A table top sale normally means the same as an indoor car boot sale, i.e. lots of different sellers who pay for their table then sell their own goods. Sellers can be ordinary people having a clearout (this category makes up the majority in my area) or dealers, charities selling donated goods, craftspeople selling their home-made wares etc.Sometimes they are called "Table Sales" or "Indoor Car Boot Sales" if you are searching the local ads
With jumble sales, all stock is donated and the proceeds all go to the same cause. In my experience about 70-80% of jumble sale stock is normally clothing, though there are bargains to be had in other departments too, and I usually find them a bit cheaper than car boot/ table top sales.
Jumble sales used to be quite common in my area, but in recent years we've had very few. I'm currently orgainsing one myself to raise money to keep our local red phone box http://siddles.livejournal.com/ - are we allowed to plug our own jumble sales here? If not I'll edit, but the one I'm running is in Dumfries, at Summerhill Community Centre, 2pm Saturday 28 March.0 -
Just after my last post the local paper arrived and there was one on locally. :j
I got a vintage 1970's brown leather jacket, an orange plastic cool box for our Camper van, 3 Ikea white cotton Roman Blinds, a 1960's blouse, a TopShop blouse (still in store) , a man's Diesel cardi, 3 skull print vests (Bench, Billabong, Motel), a mongolian lamb scarf, 3 leather belts and a Monsoon cashmere coat.....all for the princely sum of £2.50:T0 -
Great bargains! That sounds like my kind of jumble sale.0

Oooh, jumble sales - my favourite subject!! Down here in London/Surrey borders there are plenty if you don't mind travelling about a bit. I look in as many local papers as I can and usually get to about two per week in 'peak season', which is just starting now. I've found some amazing things over the years. The most useful item I found was a Dyson vacuum cleaner, which I've had for five years and is still going strong! The best areas for jumbles tend to be the suburbs with large family houses rather than the trendy 'yuppie' areas. Scout jumbles are often the best, so anywhere with several large scout groups operating is usually a good bet.0

I went to a jumble sale on saturday and bought a pair of MIH jeans brand new with tags £1 ! never heard of them till i looked on Google.
Plus a brand new pair of Levis 501 32 waist 32 leg £3 + Brand new Next jeans £1 and combat trousers 50p.
Only the combat trousers fit me but all the others will fit my daughter.
Bargain.
I think if you live in a "posh area" you can get good bargains in jumble sales .0 -
I have been desperatly looking for jumble sales in the Warwickshire area. Went to a table top sale, but it was so small and just like a car boot in doors.
Car boot sales keep me going but I have fond memories of running big girl guides jumbles at the local WI hall.... I think those days are long gone though
will just keep an eye on the locals to see if one crops upSPC5 #1651 total so far: £78.590
