Test drive at a dealership

i went in with an intention to buy a new car at one of the dealers and they gave me a 4-5 mile accompanied test drive to have a 'feel' of the car.
they also offered me some deals and was very specific about the deal 'will only be applicable on the day of the test drive'. the deals didn't allure me and I said I will think about it and get back to them. at this point they started the salesman talk, hard push selling techniques, and even said that the car which they had given the offer on may not be available on monday (it was saturday evening and they are closed on sundays)

now, i came out of that place very frustrated after defending myself against the temptaions, and to be honest, the DEAL was not at all a good one, but I actually realised this once I reached home and had a talk with my OH.

anyway i left the place saying "I will think about it and will get back to you on Monday if I decide to go ahead with my purchase"

I 'forgot' to take my mobile today to work and have come home to see 7 missed calls and 3 text messages for me to contact the dealership, one of the txt mesages saying something like, we 'may' have a better deal for you today.

I'm not interested any more and don't want to go back to them.
Do I have to call them and tell them that I'm not interested or just leave it without responding to their calls.
Please help me with some advice - in between, I have totally dropped the plan to buy a new car over the weekend after finding out the costs and the depreciation values

Would be polite to just give them a ring and say you are no longer interested. If they keep contacting you tell them to take a hike.

Hi,skyjumper.Recently been in a fairly similar situation-thought about it for a couple of days, then phoned the Dealership and told them I'd had a better deal elsewhere (true,BTW).You don't have to phone back, but if you do,be firm, otherwise you'll start dreading answering your phone.Hope this helps you

Perhaps one day car salespersons will learn that the best way to sell a car is purely on its merits. My reaction when told "it may not be available on Monday" is always "Ah well someone else will enjoy it then".

And if I do go back to salesperson and say "Sorry but I've agreed to buy elsewhere" and they say "Well we could lower price", my reply is "You had opportunity to do that first time and you're too late. The deal's done". Get very little follow up conversation if you say it politely, firmly and sincerely.

i wouldnt advise calling them to let them know, as they might start trying to talk you into it again. If they really pressured you that much, let them waste their time trying to call you, they will soon give up.
Debt free since July 2013! Woo hoo! The bank actually laughed when I said I have come in to cancel my overdraft.

Next time they call, tell them you're not buying at the moment, but would have prefered them to have been a bit more realistic with their initail offer.

Don't get in a barny with them - they MIGHT have the car you want, next time when you ARE ready to deal!!

  • Me, I'd phone them back with a silly offer, and leave it at that. You never know.
  • Tell them their pushy sales techniques have put you off.
  • On new cars, most mfr's run their pricing incentives for a calendar quarter at a time, (except Citroen who are 1mth at a time, ie. currently stated as 'order in Jan 09 for this price'): so:

    1) the best time to factory order a car is the first 2 wks of any calendar quarter to ensure the car has time to be built and registered within the price period, unless you can find ready-built stock to your specification. This is especially critical now as mfr's are building less and less 'spare stock' to avoid cars lying around unsold. More is being built 'to order' and leadtimes are generally 8-12 weeks depending on brand.

    2) on a new car, the 'deal' will be usually always be applicable for the whole of that Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sep, or Oct-Dec period...not for 'one day', as long as stock is available to meet the registration deadline within that quarter.

id string em along a bit more

good to see theyre selling so many cars they can still try and fudge people around on the pricing , if they'd offered a better price on the day sounds like they might have made a sale

Sounds like they're pretty desperate for a sale, like Lasers says, go in with a really low offer and tell them not to ring back unless they accept...
