Toucan speedtouch wired to wireless

Happy 2009 to all,

I have a Toucan broadband connection using the speedtouch wired modem provided by them. But now my partner has found a job online and we need to have hers and mine laptop online at the same time. It's annoying to unplug the cable from one to the other or taking turns to use the internet and we have been doing that so far. I have called Toucan helpdesk to ask if they do wireless routers. They said no, not on the 8 megs speed and could not assist me on finding a way to set-up a wireless connection. This on a 0870 number, expensive and unhelpful. I have recently signed up with Toucan so can't really "disconnect" them for another few months.
My question: Can I plug the speedtouch wired modem to a wireless router? If so, will it create a wireless connection?
Can you recommend a cheap wireless router which will allow me to do the above?
Is there any other way?

Many thanks...

Does your current modem connect to your laptop via USB ?

If the answer is 'yes', then you are half right. The simplest solution is to ditch it completely, and buy an 'ADSL' wireless router.

If you look on say pcworld.co.uk website -> Networking -> Wireless Modem routers for BT connections.

Normally have to spend at least £30 and upwards.

If you are strapped for cash, you may be able to pick up a cheap wireless router on eBay.

If you are prepared to do a bit of dabblling, a brand new sealed 'BT business hub' can often be bought on ebay for well under £20 delivered - although intended for use on BT Business Broadband, the 2700HGV wireless router can be made to work with other ISPs using ADSL broadband connection. Google 'Unlocking 2700HGV'. Try and buy an older model (before week 30, 2008) that is still sealed in its box.
