Weighed outside their shell is the way to go for total accuracy, but in the shell is close enough for most purposes
I just zero the scales with a soup dish on, then put my eggs in. I would also recomend Delia's all-in-one.
My tip is to beat everything together until the mix has changed to a lighter colour, they will then come out light and fluffy!

ka7e - following on from your advice I currently have a victoria sponge baking away in the oven!
I've put it in at 170C (fan oven) for about 25 mins - is this okay?

Timing really depends on the diameter and depth of your baking tins! I tend to use small deep one rather than the large shallow ones. I grease and flour the tins AND put a circle of greaseproof paper in the bottom. It's soul-destroying to put all that effort into your sponge and have it all stick inside the tin! (Nice with custard though
)
