It would be interesting if the OP returned and told us whether they got a refund, repair, or just bit the bullet and purchased a new telly.
But for the record I have to say Pinkshoes is a pretty well respected and long term member on MSE, who has advised many users "correctly" of their rights, and is someone I would regard as a useful member of the forums.
Unlike those who spend their time going around forums, dogging other members for no particular reason other than assuming they are incorrect.
Its sod's law that any appliance we buy, tends to go on the blink almost to the day the warranty runs out on it, its almost as if they are custom designed to go on the blink after a set date.
So what happens if your warranty expires, well as Pinkshoes "correctly" pointed out, according to the consumer rights board............What if my warranty has run out?
If a warranty which you have purchased in relation to goods has run out this will have no effect on your statutory rights under the Sale of Goods Act meaning that a retailer cannot refuse to provide you with a free repair simply because the length of time of the warranty has expired.
Your statutory rights under the Sale of Goods Act can often last for up to six years in relation to certain products in many cases lasting longer than any acquired warranty.
So its always best to check your facts first, before embarrassingly preaching about another members advice, especially when quite clearly according to this

I guess I just have a clumsy way of expressing things sometimes when I'm trying to type too fast and do several things at once!!
Just because something is out of its warranty, doesn't mean it should be written off immediately. A repair can often be a good option.
In this case the OP got a fair 75% refund, which would be about right given they'd only had it for 15 months. (Which works out at assuming a 5 year shelf life...).Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')
No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)0 -
Hi, exactly the same has just happened to me, mine was just 3 weeks out of warranty, been to Tescos today and they are sending me a form.
reading what happened to John Haigh has really cheered me up, the TV cost £230 new, so I am hoping for £180 to £200.
thanks for the info !0 -
we bought a £200 washing machine from Tesco that developed a leak/spill after 13 months, we filled in an out of warranty form and received £150 back, on the advice of someone who used to fix washing machines i sealed a small hole in the soap tray (that was supposed to be there) turned the water pressure down a bit and its been fine ever since:A R.I.P. Hi, Can any one assist in whether i should cut my losses?
December 2009 i bought a 26 inch LCD Technika TV. Recently (2 months ago) the screen went - as in blocks of colour, and when it eventually did come on, it sometimes freezes and then fades leaving a white screen - sound is perfect. Have rung Tesco's - they can only do me an out of warranty claim if i have my original receipt - I dont!
Have taken it to my local TV repair shop who says its a fault with Technika - there are some strips at the top of the TV that have lifted, and are un-repairable. It cost me around £180.
Shall i just cut my losses and try to find the money for a better one - im currently using my daughters portable in a large ish lounge.
Thanks in advance, Alison.0 -
Hey, have you tried contacting the company that make the technical TVs, they're a company called Sky Media and if you google them you should be able to get a repair for £49, still not worth it but cheaper than the quotes you've found!0

Bought a TESCO Teknica 22" TV DVD at full price £178 18 months ago and it died last week. Reported to TESCO after looking up advice 4 days ago. Rang me back today and offered me compensation of £70. I said this was not acceptable and considering the price and it only being 18 months old I expected a Free repair or replacement to the nearest model. Sais I was very disappointed in TESCO and at the offer. The representative did not offer anything else so I am posting here to see if anyone can offer me advice. What should I expect next. Is there a model letter I can write that will get a better result. I have read SOGA and EU law. That didn't seem to matter as he said compensation was based on a percentage scale from Trading Standards, and he couldn't give me the figures on how the sliding scale worked. I paid with a TESCO Credit card as well.0
