(Nice!) Smelling Clothes/Laundry Question

I do loads of washing and use my tumble dryer to dry them all.
I love the smell of freshly washed clothes, but all the clothes I wash tend to lose the smell straight away!

A couple of questions:
What washing powder does everyone use to retain the fresh smell?
Is it a possibility that my TD is taking away the fresh smell?
Does anyone/everyone use fabric conditioner as well?
Will it help if I dry my clothes on an airer in the house?

Sorry if this is a dumb/stupid question but I've tried lots of different powders, and can't get that fresh smell to stay :(

  • Hi,

I found this too as I can only use fairy due to allergies in the family and fairy doesn't have much smell. I find the fabric softner is the key if you will be drying in a tumble dryer and don't tumble dry to complete dryness - finish off the last bit on an airer or dry completely on airer. The other thing to do is use a tumble fresh sheet - but that really bumps up the cost...

    Hope this helps,

    Hello astep70uk

Could it be that your nose is accustomed to the smell? It's similar to effect you get when you wear perfume. After a while you don't notice it but someone else will make the comment "Oh that smells lovely".

Personally, I buy washing powders that will get my clothes clean and I'm not bothered whether they lay down a perfume onto the fabric.

Brand new clothes on display in stores don't have a perfumed smell............yet most people love to wear brand new outfits.

Don't have a tumble dryer but use Sainsbury's own brand bio tablets and they do leave the laundry smelling good - I actually find them better than ariel

I've got a condenser dryer, and I have noticed that clothes don't come out smelling as fresh as they did in the vented dryer I had before. Fabric conditioner helps a little bit. I don't use the tumble dryer sheets though - they all seem to leave the clothes smelling sickly-sweet - yukk!

The fabric conditioner that seems to be best as far as the dryer is concerned is the Ecover one.
  • I don't know if there is any reason why you couldn't put a flannel soaked in fabric conditioner in the tumble dryer with the clothes.

You could try spritzing after drying with fabric conditioner or water and essential oils. I like lavender essential oil,not quite the same as the just washed smell, but not dissimilar to Bold's Lavender and Chamomile, which I also really like, but the big boxes lose their smell towards the end.

Morrisons own peach softner always left a nice scent behind even after the TD.

Bold Tablets/powder smell lovely and come in about 3 different fragrances. I can still smell the scent after things have been in the wardrobe for weeks.

It has been mentioned somewhere that you could dab old TD sheets with an essential oil of your choice, but as has been said you could also use a scented water in your iron (for those things that you do iron) and a thread about this is linked below:-

I have just washed my sofa covers and the smell in my lounge is lovely.

I used tescos own bio (green box) powder (half amount) 2 tablespoons of soda crystals and tesco's own pure conditioner (I must admit I always OD on coditioner, love the smell and softness from it)

sorry just noticed this, I have one of those dryers that collects all the water in a bottle rather than a vent, I use the water out of the bottle for ironing, this means any smell that has come out in the water goes back in to the clothes :D
