pin numbers only from January?

Options
When I was paying with my switch card the other day I was told that I will need a chip and pin card in order to use it from January.

However, havent received this from HSBC, nor have we got a pin for the Egg card yet.

Is the January information correct and should I be contacting HSBC and Egg to chase up? ???

I just pop in now and then.... :)

I think the January cut-off date is for cards which are already chip and pin ie. you will be able to use only your pin (not a signature) from january. At the moment I think they still let you sign even if you have a chip and pin card. But eventually there has to come a time when you can only use your pin. This is probably January.

I received a new Morgan Stanley card a couple of months ago which is valid for two years and it is not a chip and pin card. I would have thought it would be, but it is not and I assume if this Jan cut-off date was correct for all cards they would have sent me one then?

I did think it was odd though that it wasn't chip and pin.

My local Sainsburys has just installed Chip and Pin checkouts . I spoke to American express ( Amex Blue card ) asking for a chip and pin reminder as I can't find it. They said they have never issued chip and pin numbers for these cards. They did not give a date as to when they intended to issue chip and pin numbers.
The credit card policy of the retailer determines what type of card is acceptable, what authentication is required and when changes in this policy take place.

  • If your card is chip & pin, from 1st Jan the retailer will be personally liable for any fraudulent use unless the Pin is used. This contrasts with the present situation, where the CC company pick up the tab.

If your card is not chip & pin, then the retailer's system will print out a receipt for you to sign as before.

If you are told anything different, the shop staff will not have had the situation properly explained to them, so politely put them right.

I changed all mine on Saturday. If someone manages to snoop and get my PIN, & then nicks my wallet I'm stuffed!

If you don't have your PIN/S ring up the card people and get them to resend. They'll be in force soon if not already. I used mine on Saturday @ M&S. You can then change the PIN @ the cash point you bank with.

You don't have to bother with PINs if you persist on being issued a Chip & Signature Card!

I installed chip and pin into the company I work for.

The official chip and pin start date is Jan 05 but many card companies are not ready (like amex).

Therefore there seems to be 3 types of cards.

    Chip and Pin activated
    Chip and Pin non activated
    No chip and no pin

From Jan 05 if you have a chip and pin activated card and the card reader in store asks for a pin number then you must use it. There will be no pin overide facility (unless the cc companies are really behind and postpone this idea until later).

If you card does not have an activated pin or a chip then the card reader will revert to swipe and sign as usual until the system is fully implemented.

Chip and Pin will be very good for us all in security terms, unfortunately all the banks are still not ready for it (France has had it for 10 years).

Also, if you can always pick up the pin pad and hold it close to your chest. No one must see the pin. M&S have terrible pin pads that offer very little privacy and are static.
