My friend has lost 4 stone on this in the last year and looks amazing. It's the only thing that's ever worked for her - she's tried loads of different diets, gym etc. So I would say it definitely has its place for the right person. For me, although I would like to be slimmer, enjoying the taste of good food is one of life's pleasures and I think the depression of living off liquids would far outweigh any weight loss benefits for me. So I guess it depends how much you enjoy food, cooking etc.

It cost her a fortune - about £70 a WEEK i think! But it did include counselling. She said the downside was that it was hard socialising because everyone wants to go out and get drunk and she could only have water. She also missed chewing food!

my friend also did this and lost loads of weight but has put it back on. There is a story in closer mag this week about someone who did lighter life, but not a happy ending.

This took off in my workplace about 18 months ago, with about 6 people doing it at the same time- those who stuck with it lost a lot of weight, but ALL have now put it back on (and more) ....one is now doing it for a second time. No doubt it is effective (but expensive), but unless you can really change your lifestyle afterwards the weight quickly piles back on (true for all diets probably !)

i have a few friends who have done this and it has cost them a fortune, they did loose weight however as soon as they started taking real food again they put it all back on and more?? i would strongly advise against it and at the cost per month you could go to a diet class, exercise and probably buy a fab new wardrobe at the end of it all:D good luck x

i would personally do sureslim (its real food) Ive just lost 7 1/2 stone.:D I know quite a few people from lighter life that are now doing it through sureslim now.

Lots of LL people lose the weight though so good luck if this is the way you are planning to go.

Just remember though that weight loss is a lifetime battle and whatever way you chose is one you need to bounce back onto as you never lose the addiction to food.

Dont know how much you are planning on losing but really sincerely wish you the best of luck

I worked with someone who dit this and lost at least 4 stone but she looked completely ill on it. She was pale, tired and had no energy at all, totally the opposite of people losing weight by eating healthily. She said she felt dreadful on it but she was desperate to lose the weight. I don't work with her now but I suspect she would have put the weight back on as this is nothing short of a starvation diet. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole despite being desperate to lose weight.
  • My experience:

I did it over 12 weeks (couldn't stick to the whole 14) and lost 3st 2lbs going from a size 16 to a size 10/12.

It cost a small fortune - £792 for the meals, and then 1 tub of water flavouring each week costing £9, so an extra £90 on top of that - so the best part of a grand. When I finished in September 2007 I was convinced it was the best thing I had ever done.

However, I couldn't afford to do the maintainance bit of it. After you finish your initial 14 weeks you then start maintainance. You get a book and it tells you what sort of things you can eat for the first couple of days, then a week, and week 2, week 3 etc... I can't quite remember now (long time ago, and I don't have my books anymore) but you are still on shakes for quite some time, so you are still buying them but instead of buying 28, you buy 21 for a few weeks, then 14 for a few weeks, then 7 so it still costs you for another few months after that.

So, I couldn't afford to do the above so was just given the book and sent on my way! I didn't find the counselling helpful at all, so as soon as I stopped going I gave myself free reign to eat what I liked and of course the weight + more piled back on, and within a year I had put on four stone, and was a dress size bigger than when I had started.

However, my MIL did it too, and she has kept the weight off and looks great. She'd put her weight on initially through comfort eating after going through an acromonious divorce. She met a new fella, started LL and as I said as she has changed her comfort eating pattern she just eats normally.

Me - my eating pattern is all fooked up through years of overeating cos of loving food and here I am £1000 lighter (sadly not lighter in weight pounds).

So - what I am saying is - you can't go back to 'normal eating' (ie how you eat now) and only you are responsible for keeping the weight off. I in no way blame the diet for the weight going back on. Maybe if I didn't have MIL as an example I may have done, but I cant!

Can I ask why you want to do Lighter Life? Is it for the meal replacements, or because of the counselling? If it's the former, then Cambridge Diet is half the price...

I want to add, I felt great - my skin was lovely and glowing from drinking so much water, and I had loads of energy and never felt sluggish at all. I wish I could feel like that now!

Have a look on www.minimins.com. There's a thread there for every diet under the sun! I did Lipotrim (3 shakes a day, no counselling, £36 per week) 2/3 years ago and lost 5 stones or so. Best thing I ever did. I do put weight back on (always will, I think) but I nip it in the bud quickly now so things don't get too out of hand.
