Thanks everyone! My wonderful husband bit the bullet, bought four new glow plugs (£42) and replaced all of them. When he tested them, he found one was faulty.
(Took a bit of grovelling - he only likes working on cars at least 20 years old -says he doesn't understand these new-fangled ones...)
He did this before the car went for the EGR valve clean, which was done for a charge of £68.43.
Garage was not particularly ecstatic, but I "saved" £100 so I'm happy.
All seems well now.0
