Renault Modus - EGR valve problem - they say
My Modus 1.5 DCI 80 is 5 years old this week, with 55,000 miles, mostly on motorways.
Last week a message came on saying "Check Emissions". On Friday, I took it to the Renault dealer for MOT and to see what this was about. It passed its MOT, no problems they said, and they "carried out fault memory, cleared the codes".
On Saturday morning, the same message came up so I took it back. They retested and said I need " to replace 4 heater plugs and strip and clean the EGR valve". Total cost £227.12.
I don't know a lot about cars, but can anyone tell me why I need the heater plugs replacing when I have absolutely no starting problems, and why does this work need done when on Friday it passed the emission test for the MOT?
I'd be so grateful for advice from someone who understands these things - £227 is not in my budget for January!!

"Check Emissions" on the Renault diesel engines usually means a glow plug or an injector thats duff.
We do them on near enough every Renault we get in. More common on the 1.5 than the 1.9.
Not sure why they want to replace all four tho? Unless all four are failing...?
Usually they go one by one. Ask them to check them individually.
Also, take it else where for a 2nd opinion.
Contact your local Trading Standards to see who'd they'd recommend you use.0 -
Thank you so much for this - I will do what you suggest.
They charged me £90 on Friday for supposedly sorting this, re-aligning a faulty headlamp and changing the brake fluid and coolant (scheduled jobs after 5 years, they said), so that came to nearly £200 already this month!0 -
There is a known fault with these engines - see here

Thanks Phil -that's a very interesting site.0

the glow plugs dont just help start the car they also stay on for a short while after the car is started to burn off the soot on them.
generally glow plugs arent to hard to change, could you not get them out yourself and change them yourself....work permit granted!0 -

You are right, gentlemen - I would not even know which end of the car to start looking for a glow plug! But maybe I know a man who does.....!!!
So is it easy to test these plugs to find out which one is faulty?
And if he finds one that is faulty, and replaces it, will the error message go away? Or do you think I still need this EGR valve stripped and cleaned by the garage?0 -

he will need to know what he is doing to test them, its always easy when you know how.
