"Urine stains are one of a pet owner's biggest headaches, particularly cat urine which has a singularly unpleasant smell and can seem to linger forever if not treated quickly. Whatever you do, never use an ammonia-based cleaner on a urine stain caused by a pet as the smell will attract the animal back to that spot.

If the urine stain is fresh, you can usually treat it by just rinsing it thoroughly in cold water and then washing it as normal, using a biological laundry detergent if possible (same as for vomit). If the stain is older and dried, you will need to soak the garment overnight in a weak solution of hydrogen peroxide and water, then wash as directed above. An alternative to this is soaking in salty water, if you do not have hydrogen peroxide handy.

Carpets are a little more difficult in that they cannot be soaked. However, you can treat the area immediately with soda water which should minimise the staining. Once the excess urine has been blotted up, sponge the stain with salty water and then rinse and blot dry.

Again, sprinkling bicarbonate soda onto the stain and leaving for a while before vacuuming should combat any lingering odours."

I always learnt that biological washing powder does the job for any bodily spills/smells.
  • Surgical spirt mixed with water (1 part SS and 10 Parts water) will get rid of it, also works well for stopping animals going back to the same spot.
Real men never follow instructions; after all they are just the manufacturer's opinion on how to put something together. :p

With pet urine, vinegar or bio washing powder would do the trick, don't see why it wouldn't work here :) You could scatter bicarbonate of soda on too, or make a paste with it, then hoover off when dry.

The problem that you have is the uric acid smell which is pretty awful because even if it dries it leaves a lingering odour long after febreeze et al has left. You can neutralise the odour with half water and vinegar and spray it well but if you have foam innards for your support then it's going to be a devils own job to deal with because quite simply you will never be able to tackle it deep enough into the foam to get it out.

As an aside you are also going to have to deal with why your little one wee wees on your sofa because this is not good at all - as I am sure you well know! The issue is getting to the root cause of the problem and dealing with it, because if this continues then you will simply have no sofa or chair worth saving - and I mean that in the nicest sense as well!

If you have a steam cleaner or can borrow one this will help as the steam kills off the bacteria that make the smell, also it will not oversoak the fabric of the sofa.

    thanks guys.

going sound odd would wall paper steamer do the job?

will try the bicarb and vinigar trick.

To be honest the sofas seens better days and only few years old a huge regret.

we got from home base2years ago.

The first 2 we had were faulty and chennile which bobbled badly and lost its shape.

so 3rd one i picked was faux leather.
it turned up was more faux suade
hubby liked it so kept but not been good with the kids.
it looks so tatty even when scrubbed its looks rubbish, back cushions lost shape and it attract bits its like a fluff magnet.

As for the toddler its driving me nuts

shes potty trained never has accidents anywhere else.
can happily use toiliet and potty independantly
has no accidents when out or at nursery.

yet she uses sofa like a litter tray.

    I have tried shouting
    sending her to naughty step
positive praise when she uses toiliet

its getting me down im constantly scrubbing it 3times a day.
    putting on clean throws.
i washed all cushions yesterday put them back on and shes weed on them too.

hoping when have spare money to get 2nd hand leather off ebay.

  • It's not going to help to get rid of the existing smell, but for future probs, would it be possible to take the covers off, put bin liners or something over the foam, then put the covers back on? It might be a bit weird and crackly, but at least it would keep the wee in the removable/washable fabric rather than soaking into the foam.
"Most of the people ... were unhappy... Many solutions were suggested for this problem, but most of these were largely concerned with the movements of small green pieces of paper, which is odd because on the whole it wasn't the small green pieces of paper that were unhappy." -- Douglas Adams
