Dog not closing mouth properly?

Me and OH have noticed this evening that our dog is not closing his mouth properly, he is also drinking alot. We have changed his water 3/4 times today and have noticed that everytime he has a drink there is froth floating around in his water (possibly brought up by the dog?). I have had a look in his mouth but can't see anything unusual. Any ideas?

  • I'd take him to the vets and get him checked over. He may have something caught in his mouth/throat. Does he fetch sticks or eat stones? (I've no idea why dogs do this but my friends dog does it all the time)

Hi hun, he hasn't been out today, I've been at work all day so he's only been in the garden where there are no sticks and he doesn't eat stones. He seems alright in himself, it's just really weird because I've never seen him do it continuously before:confused: and the froth in the water has really got me stumped?!

  • Have you looked at the roof of his mouth? Our family dog has had a dog chew caught sideways in the roof and was drinking more. She also managed to get a stick caught vertically between her jaws - was quite a sight. I was panicking but she seemed fine, just looked a bit odd!

I did have a quick look (for as long as he would let me... all of 2 secs!)
I think I might pin him down and have a better look because that was one of my first thoughts.
Thanks for your help hun, I'm gonna go attempt to pin down a 4 stone dog and see how far I get:eek::D

Definitely see the vets I'm afraid... It could be anything from something stuck to a growth you can't easily see to something entirely different - let a vet have a look :)

Well I pinned him down to have a look and can't see anything abnormal. I'm gonna keep an eye on him cos he doesn't seem to be in any pain or anything, infact he's acting his normal self?! I'll probably pop him into the vets tomorrow just for peace of mind

I'd say it was a tooth problem like an abscess or something so please do take him down to the vets because sometimes if a dog is in pain, and they cannot tell you, they could easily turn on you.

Only a vet can tell you what is wrong so please don't take any advice given on here. If you pin your dog down to look in it's mouth and it is in pain then that can be very dangerous indeed so please be careful.

The 10 points go to Kimberley!! He had a wobbly back tooth with an abcess growing on it, the offending tooth has now been removed and he is lying next to me sleeping off the sedatives bless him.
P.S. I didn't literally pin him down lol
