If it will work on a 3G/UMTS band then you can go ahead and do that, it is perfectly fine.
before you buy a phone check out the specs on this website:

If it says '3G - yes' then you will be perfectly fine - if the phone is unlocked though (or it's actually a '3' branded phone).
Also remove the battery from the phone and don't try and charge the phone, you will only damage it, you should be able to get it repaired quite cheaply.0
