Broadband speeds

....................

Comments

  • All these site checkers such as Sam Knows can only GUESS at any theoretical line speed. They dont always get it right.

In reality you will never know how fast you get until you get it installed and they test the line. There are such a varied reason that can affect line quality. And as the crow flies distance from the exchange does also not mean the line goes directly from them to you, sometimes they can go via all sorts before getting to you.

Does your broadband router have the facility to tell you what the line attenuation is, or if you are having dropouts or CRC errors? Does your line sound noisy on the phone at all?

If you are on an ADSL MAX account, the first few weeks of the line being used, they vary the speed up and down until the quality is constant, if you happen to have some problem with your liune during this "training" period, your line can get locked into a low rate for ever after that, unless you can ersuade your ISP to re-assess your line.
