What breed is the puppy? Skin problems can be much more common in certain breeds ie westies or golden retrivers etc. It would be best to take the dog to the vets to be sure what you are dealing with some skin conditions may need a course of baths and or medication it may not be just as simple as dandruff. As it is just a puppy it may or may not be the start of a more serious condition and could be a food allergy or primary seborrhoea or atopic dermatitis or it may be just poor coat condition and need a supplement such as eveing primrose oil or similar. it really is best to get the vet to check it

  • My cat had this problem and we were recommended oliy fish- pilchard/mackeral/sardine etc in to the biscuits, very good for dogs anyway, for the omega3 especially pups, but not too much! Daisy has fish every other day and it keeps her coat in fantastic condition, in oil not salty brine and remember to drain the tin!
  • Just watch out for the squits if you add any oil to his food - may not help with toilet training if it greases his innards and speeds it all up! (if you get my meaning!)

I am guessing his skin has been made temporarily dry by bathing him, also you need to rinse dogs very well otherwise they get flaky sometimes.

a little drop of olive oil on his dinner won't hurt him. and should help with the coat.
  • Ditto the fish. I give my pup a tin of mackerel or sardines in tomato sauce a couple of times per week mixed in with her normal kibble. She also has a raw chicken wing twice per week (not on the same day as the fish) which also helps with her coat and helps keep her anal glands clear.

Don't worry too much about the dandruff, all pups go through transition phases where they get used to food and eating things they shouldn't and all the rest of it. If he seems itchy with it, then look at changing his food.

I am assuming it is a 10 week old pup if it has just had it's 2nd shots, please do not add things to his/her diet at this stage. A pup needs stability and consistency with food at this age. The fish and chicken wings is great but not in a young pup.

As for the dandruff, many pups get a scurfy dandruffy look as they start to develop. don't worry about it at this stage.

Do you give him cow's milk to drink? That can cause dandruff.....

Water is fine if he's getting plenty of calories from his food...

Nah I've never given him any kind of milk to drink, I just stick to good old water :o

He's a CKCS - its been absolutely fine up until the past few days so i'm guessing its because I've bathed him - I will take him to the vet to be on the safe side though

Hi, usually it does settle down after a bath but will return again within a few days or so. I can recommend Pro-Plan complete dog food which is what we feed our pug on. Its a salmon sensitive food and since she has been having that her dandruff has cleared up, probably because it contains fishy oils. I can also confirm that I have read in my pug books about primrose oil helping the problem. :)
