I think the OR will take the £50 but a good idean to let them have it if not. There are alot of really cheap run arounds about at the moment so it might be better to look round for something cheap with a decent gearbox.

  • Can I ask... why did they not let you keep a £300 car?

(Apologies if I missed the reason somewhere)

I think its a cheek for them take your car. How much is it going to be worth to your creditors? After costs etc absolutely zilch! Who benefits here? No one!

  • That's what's puzzling me... seems very harsh... was it because you couldn't prove a justifiable need for it? ie- work, kids, etc

  • my OR wouldnt let me have it as i dont use it for work.

i stated on my forms i have a 2 1/2yr old son a 4mth old baby daughter and i take my nan shopping and to hospital appointments as she suffers from alot of illnesses and is unable to go alone or on public transport. i put her down as a dependant on the forms as im the only one who can take her as im a full time mum. my uncle used to take her but hes recently had a stroke which has affected the vision part of hes brain so hes half blind so its only me that can do it.

my friend works in scrap and told me the scrap value of a car is £80 so im not going any higher than that. ive done a search on some breakers yards for prices of gearboxes if it does need it so just trying to work out if the price of the gearbox would be better than buying another car as it is a good car it starts first time everytime even on frozen mornings very good on petrol. my friend is a mechanic so he will do labour for free if i get the parts. but hes been busy so hasnt got round to looking at it yet

Always helpful to have a mechanic friend  Are you going to be able to afford to run the car on your surplus if the OR hasn't allowed it??

  • im not working at the moment so no ipa, but my dad pays tax and mot as i use it to run my nan about so i just pay petrol and insurance. thats why i was supprised the OR wouldnt allow it as my dad pays the tax/mot i just pay running costs, also being worth so little its hardly worth them taking it

It shouldn't affect surplus if Lisa doesn't work - she won't be getting an IPA.

I would be tempted to tell the OR to stuff it and make have it collected and sell it at auction. That would take over £300 I'm sure and they'd get b*gger all! However if it does start first time every time hard decision to make.

Remember you can negotiate and several people on here have been successful. If you can get it for £50 you wouldn't be able to get a replacement for that amount.

Did your dad buy the car for you by any chance?

    :j :j

  • yeah my dad did buy it as my prievious car that i sold before i got this one was a bit of a money pit in disguise. i sold my last one to a friend of the family for £350 made sure they knew evrything that was wrong with it so no comebacks they sold it 2 wks later for £150 because it completely seized up on them so i sold it at the right time. in hindsight i should of just put the logbook in a friends name before br and just said i sold it as i was skint but insurance is in my name, also didnt want to get my dad involved of trying to prove he bought it so i just said i used the money from preivious sale to buy this one.

but i didnt think they would bother trying to take it so thought it was safe
