Deagostini

Okay - let off steam here....

My OH subscribed to their 'War Movies DVD' collection last year, 1 every fortnight, £7.99 each.

Yesterday I checked my bank account and saw that they had taken out £35.91 instead of the usual £15.98, so I phoned them up.

First thing that annoyed me was that the person I spoke to was French - fair enough its a french company, but I was having to repeat myself umpteen times  she couldn't even get my name right, and it's French!

Anyway....I queried the amount and as told it was for 4 DVD's sent in November. Tried explaining that they had taken 2 payments in Nov, and 2 in Dec. (I checked my statements before I phoned them)

Apart from that, 4 x £7.99 = £31.96, not £35.91, which she just couldn't seem to fathom.

In the end, I gave up and just told them to cancel my subscription and I wouldn't be dealing with them again.

Moan over. :o

  • A warning to Anyone considering taking up these part works that proliferate at the beginning of every year.

    Consider the cover price.
    Per fortnight usually
    No end in sight.
Look at the BEST book (or several) that you could buy on the subject and decide if it really is worth it.

My experience is that by issue 5 they are 4 -8 pags shorter and out of synch with product extra's. A complete rip off.

See if you can find ANYONE in the world who has ever completed a collection.

I agree totally with your post apart from the last sentence - I have known someone who completed a part-work collection (can't recall the topic as it was something like trains which did not interest me in the slightest!) :)

Cost them a horrendous amount for the very same reasons that you listed in your post however :D

Was this company not on watchdog or something last year.

And don't they stop producing the part works halfway through so you can get a complete collection.

Personally I never touch anything that is part work. My mother got sucked in when my brother was little and it was about 50 issues one every fortnight and cost a bomb and he never read them. Stuffed in the attic now.

I know what you mean, i took out a subscription to the Scooby Doo collection for my son with free gifts sent with every so many issues.

Firstly they messed up on the issues i would get 4 issues in a month lets say numbers 14, 15, 16, 17 then the next month i would get issues 16, 17, 18, 19 so they would repeat some of the issues soi rang them and spent nearly 40minutes on hold then another 15 once i had got through trying to explain the situation.

The in one month they took double the amount out of the bank never sent any issues and we never received any of the free gifts.

So i got a pit narked off so i rang them again, this time i was on hold for just over 50 minutes and then when the lady answered the phone i said "do you want my account number" at which point she said "NO THANKS" and put the phone down.

I ended up e-mailing them cancelling my subscription and DD.

I got a reply via e-mail stating they were sorry to lose my custom. then a few days later i received a letter stating you have not paid your subcription in full please pay XXX amount.

I politely explained via e-mail that they had taken more than the were due so i should be refunded or i would be going to watchdog and writing to there head.

Lets just say the money was there asap and no more problems.

My bf started collecting the Mind Body and Spirit for me a couple of years ago (notice they have brought it out again recently) and we knew from the beginning it was a 100 part collection. We found that out as it has somewhere in the paperwork and also paying £2.99 each issue we wanted to know how many there would be. Yes i know its a lot of money, £300 for the collection but he didnt mind at the time. Anyway somewhere around part 95 our newsagent man said did we want to continue with the collection (we paid for two issues up front and knew we would get issue 99 and 100 for no payment as already had paid). When asked what he was on about he told us that they had extended the issues so instead of now being 100 there would be 140 or it may have been 150. I couldnt believe it and thought it was so wrong that they were allowed to get away with doing that. Even though i so much wanted to complete the collection we cancelled after issue 100. We have certainly learnt from this and will not be buying anything similar in future. Everytime we see anything like it on tv know we make a comment.

    Thanks for the replies.

I normally don't like these partworks things, but my OH is really into War Movies, and at £7.99 for a DVD, it was easier to just get a subscription than try and buy them all in the shops. He never bothered with the magazines that came with them.

Ah well...he's got 30 of them, and they take up enough room...and I'm now saving £16 a month. :D

If you want cheap war films then go onto Amazon and troll through all the titles you are interested in, pick out the cheap 2nd hand ones. I did this with sci fi films and got two at 1p each (from someone trying to build up recommendations). There are loads beteen £3 - £6.

Lately, if it's a topic of interest to me (and generally the ones with a DVD), I will buy the first one for around £3.00 and leave it at that.

I recently got the pilot episode of CSI this way as although I like the series I have no intention of buying the masses of season boxsets that are available (as on constant repeat) and had never seen the pilot before.

As far as collecting the set on a weekly/fortnightly, I find it all too much hassle and cash! :D
