okay latest update. As this is the first (and hopefully only) time I have ever claimed I will tell you the pains and pitfalls as I experience them first hand.

Gave information on Monday over the phone. Was booked an appointment for both me and hubby for Friday (not bad!). Wastold in the meantime to go to jobcentre and pick up a JSA form and complete to bring in Friday.

Went in to day and asked for it. Was asked we don't give them out - why do you want it? I explained what I had been told, she then said oh ok they did say they may hae to do that to some claims!

The thing is the form asks most of the questions she asked on the form anyway. Do I still fill this in and take it with me? I found both our P45's dated earlier this year, hubby been own boss since. Would they take 2006/2007 2007/2008 into account?

    Thanks

Got the form and sat down to fill it in . Not too bad.

Have a question please, you so knowledgable people!

    Part 11 (JSA) says:

We need to know if any of the people living with you have any money coming in.

Then: You do not have to answer these questions but if the money they have coming in is low, you may get more money.

mmmmm. what should I put - my daughter has literally (2nd month) just started work and earns £12000 a year, but pays out N.I and fares which leaves her with about £500 per month. Should I put this down or not?????

By the way not impressed with council. Called them Monday to ask somebody to call me re: council tax benefit. Heard nothing. Sent them an email today (as I thought they can deny me calling). The sent one back saying they will be in touch within 10 days. Joke!
  • Have you looked on your council's website? Some of them have council tax benefit forms you can print off and fill in, or online completion. It sounds like that could be a lot quicker than waiting for them to get back to you. When you do fill in the form, it's worth keeping a copy in case they query anything or lose it! Good luck:beer:. And as you first contacted them when you phoned, ask them to backdate it to at least then (possibly earlier, other posters may know more about this).

I don't think your daughter living with you will make a difference to JSA so just be honest on the form (not suggesting you wouldn't!), for purposes of LHA (Housing benefit) you will be subjected to a non-dependant deduction (you can find out how much from your council website), I think for Council tax your daughter would be subject ot paying 75% of that due as the only working member of the house.

Sorry! Just remembered you have a mortgage so LHA not applicable!

I would tell the truth and let them know what your daughter earns.

Would they really expect her to pay 75% of the council tax on what she has left?

She has about £500 left after fares to pay for her for the months for lunches and car tax (100) and fuel (100)and parking (60). Our council tax bill is about £180 per month

No they would not, there would be small non-dependant deduction if you get Council Tax Benefit. If you look on your local council website there should be further details.

I lived with my nan for a while and had to pay her council tax as I was working - she'd previously had it paid through benefit. This is going back 10 yrs now though so things may hopefully have changed.

Thanks. Well the council called today, after me leaving them 2 calls and a email. They have made an appointment for a telephone session for Tuesday to fill in the form and then they will come round to sign the form and relevant paperwork. (see where you live I reckon).

I will declare daughter as I only want to be honest, and hopefully we can make ends meet until hubby gets another job. As he was the main earner it looks very bleak and savings almost run out completely, so panicking now and hope that tax credits or JSA will be payable. Have JSA interview tomorrow. Does anyone know how long they take to come back to you to let you know if you are eligible?
