Not a lot to add to this, but as well as everything else I think childminders now need to have an up to date First Aid qualification.

What I don't know is whether you can start minding before your registration comes through. When it was Social Services, you could, probably because they were desperate in some areas, and they'd probably carried out some checks first.

  • I'm a registered childminder. In Scotland you have to register with the Care Commission, and I'm sure I was told pe-registration, that if you have a family waiting for you, they will try to register you quicker.

If you are in Scotland, try http://www.childminding.org/
or for England, you should have a look at http://www.ncma.org.uk/

Not sure about Wales (hey, I cant know EVERYTHING!) :)

Personally I think it is all a bit ridiculous that you have to be a registed childminder to help a friend out and earn a bit of extra cash.I would judge this situation with common sense rather than over catious rules.
I guess it comes down to how good friends you are,how much you trust each other,I mean I understand what people are saying ,you have to consider potential situations, should anything go wrong, but I think if it suits you both, who's going to know or interfere? It's hard to put a figure on what to charge, again it depends on how close you are, if it's part of a swings and roundabouts kind of relationship, or is this the only exchange of favours between you.I'd also take into consideration how much of an inconvenience it is to you, and how much your friend is earning. If it doesn't put you out too much and they're nice kids I'd say about £10 a day.
