That is the free version, there is no charge for this program it is free and that site I linked to don't charge, you just select download and then the mirror site you want to download it from.

Where you can select the US Mirror.

I've seen similar when the prog has been previously blocked by the firewall / AV suite. Check those to make sure Messenger isn't blocked by default.0

Aha, yes... Nail on head... The MSN download and install I think requires your PC to contact back and if your firewall or virus software (whichever you use) won;t allow it, then MSN will freeze and stop or cancel....
I remember now as I had the same problem with my Mrs PC and had to allow everything until it had installed and then allowed MSN to contact externally thereafter...

No, that you don't. You can download without email address and you can sign up to use it, using any working email address.
