Tuna in brine v tuna in spring water

I usually buy Tesco value tuna in brine but the price has shot up to 55p a tin.

Sainsburys have their packs of 4 John West and Princes at half price ie £2.69 branded v £2.20 Tesco value.

I was wondering is there a big difference between spring water tins of tuna and tins of tuna in brine as I normally only buy the brine ones?

Tuna in spring water is much healthier for you than in brine! And I personally think it tastes much better too.

I've used both & to be perfectly honest once it's mixed with mayo I can't tell the difference. Maybe if you're eating it on its own you might notice that the brine tuna tastes slightly saltier than the spring water tuna. Not much in it for me though.

    I've been Money Tipped!
It will be mixed with salad cream so I suppose the only difference is the salt content.

    Thanks folks.

I know this is not related to the question, but before I was veggie I used to get tuna in sunflower oil, nicer than both the others i thought!!
  • After Sainsbury's last price rise on tinned tuna in spring water, I started buying the kosher version - much cheaper, tastes the same, and there is more in the tin (look on the shelf label for the "drained weight"). I realise that it is cheaper because it is old stock - many of the tins are stuck together - and it won't continue to be cheaper than the other brands.

I would buy that except for the "drained weight" of tuna inside being less than the other kinds.

As it's the new year and my diet starts i tend to eat a lot of tuna. Have it with dry toast and and a sprinkling of pepper.!! Somehow it makes it taste wonderful without being too dry.
I prefer spring water cos it's got less salt i presume. I've always thought that buying in brine and rinsing under the tap wouldn't be that much different than spring water?? Would i be correct??
  • i personally prefer the tuna in sunflower oil...i think in brine is the most pop. form of tinned tuna and is a product that people consisitently purchase so the big supermarkets presume few will notice....to be honest before discovering mse i was happy to plonk things in my trolley with out really noticing price changes..everyone is right saying that the tuna is water is healthier...but the difference is quite minimal
  • If anyone is interested, we bought tuna in Netto today. 185g in brine was 48p- that was chunks. The flaked stuff was cheaper but cant remember exactly how much. You may not recognise the brand-"deepblue", but tuna is tuna whoever canned it in my opinion.
