What Does This Tell You

Over the last week or two noticed a very slight constant whistling noise from my pc tower....it's not enough to start annoying me (yet)...
however....
what i have noticed is that the noise gets slightly more pronounced when doing something like closing an open window or opening a program.
Any idea where it may be coming from?

It may be your fans on case or processor usually its the case, It may need cleaning out, not sure why closing and opening a window would do this so much, but the whistling noise is a symptom of a fan

I cleaned the fans a few weeks ago with a can of compressed air.

Sometimes they just need replacing depends on how old and how much use they have had. Normally cleaning them is fine for months if not a year but on occasions I have had to replace some before now admittedly they were quiet old 3+ years

    just wondering...
that by blowing air at the heatsink i may have caused some damage?

    How about the psu fan?

I strip mine down and clean it but I do make sure all power is off and let it discharge for a while. They get very dirty inside

Little unsure about striping mine down.....

i did give it a slight blow with the air (directed at the fan)

however i doubt if that really did a good job of cleaning it.

If it is the PSU, I suggest you do not strip it down... Try starting it with the case off and seeing if you can hear which fan it is... If the PSU, then get a new PSU and replace it.. Best and easiest way...

If the case fan (if you have one), they are easy to replace as is the CPU fan... ;)

Worst case; It might be a capacitor on the motherboard!

You say the whine changes when you open / close windows and applications. I've heard things like this from some of the 'cheaper' brands of motherboards (cheap components like non-solid capacitors tend to have a high pitch whine before failing or bursting!.)

What's the make of the motherboard? A few of the high end mobo makers were caught out when they were sold a load of cheap components a few years back!

That make sounds OK, can't find any problems.
