Is there are standard cost for doing this?

No, Barclays has virtually nothing by the way of standard counter fees - the only issue you might come across is some counter staff who would be unwilling to do it, but I never saw a problem with it when I had my branch - I mean, it's essentially the same as a transfer anyway, just an !!! backwards way of doing it. ;)

unfortunatly this is no longer the case, only barclays credits taken with cheques. how long ago did you have a branch ? :)

Same. No non-HSBC cheques for non-HSBC credits. Simple as.

Maybe in your branch, but not in all of them. The BGC acceptance policy on branch/contact centre SID isn't universally followed, and the POD software will still accept any credit, obviously. So it really just depends on the staff being willing to take it.

And speaking as a now-Commercial guy to a Retail guy, I can tell you that we make a ridiculous amount off inter-bank agreements, which we wouldn't be able to do if this was impossible. As I say, it really depends on the counter staff you have there.

And to answer your question, I left my branch in March 07 to go to RBCR, then I came over to Commercial in February 08. :)

You need a pre-printed payin slip from the back of your cheque book, or from a payin book - there will be no charge from NatWest.

You may be able to payin the cheque in the same way at Barclays, but they may not accept it as your not their customer. It's more hit and miss.

Hi, i have a RBS account but no RBS branch nearby. i have a barclays cheque which i want to deposit into my RBS account. I have a natwest (which is a part of RBS i believe) and barclays locally, could i cash the cheque into either of those without inccuring a charge, or do i need to goto a RBS branch?

Having worked in various branches in the North East Wales area I can confirm that it is standard practice for Barclays credits to only be accepted over the counter, obviously this is different if a Barclays customer presents the counter staff with a BGC for a credit card bill, or water bill etc. I guess it is to reduce the amount of missing credits as it is virtually impossible to trace a payment of a HSBC cheque paying a Capital One credit card bill for example.

As mentioned, the easiest way is to give Natwest a Bank Giro Credit slip which is used for paying in, along with the cheque. If you explain the situation, I'm sure they'll do it for you - I know I've done it a few times for my customers who have Natwest accounts (even though there is a Natwest 20 seconds walking distance away :p).

Sometimes, there can be issues with 3rd party cheques (which RBS don't accept), but this should be fine.

Oh and for the record, RBS just use the same equipment at Natwest - they don't have access to their accounts and vice versa.
Anything that I do say, is strictly my opinion :p

Recently I asked at an Abbey branch if I could deposit into Bradford & Bingley accounts there and they said no - so it isn't the same for all banks with common owners

I suspect this will happen eventually - remember they have only been under 'common ownership' for a little while..

You were not allowed to take 3rd party payments at Barclays.

If you took a HSBC cheque and say a Natwest BGC for a utility bill, the bill would always be paid but if the cheque was returned the branch took the loss.

You could only ever take the items if one of them was a Barclays cheque or ABC/BGC credit. That was the case for some time, however some branches did take 3rd party stuff and shouldn't.
These are my thoughts and no one else's, so like any public forum advice - check it out before entering into contracts or spending your hard earned cash!

I don't know everything, however I do try to point people in the right direction but at the end of the day you can only ever help yourself!

This will happen. B&B staff are being trained on the Abbey Partenon system and will have it rolled out in the next few months. The likely scenario is that we end up seeing Abbey, A&L and B&B rebranded as Santander in the near future.
