Cashing cheques in banks where you aren't a customer?

Options
Hi, i have a RBS account but no RBS branch nearby. i have a barclays cheque which i want to deposit into my RBS account. I have a natwest (which is a part of RBS i believe) and barclays locally, could i cash the cheque into either of those without inccuring a charge, or do i need to goto a RBS branch?

Someone in my local RBS branch said I could pay in cheques at Natwest - but I never tried this as I closed my account a few days later (long story).

Post it to RBS head office with the account number on the back of the cheque?

Some banks give freepost envelopes out, some request a paying in slip to go with it (usually found at the back of the chequebook)

Your chequebook and/or statement will have an address for sending it to, or post it to the local branch.

To save you from possible future confusion, depositing a cheque and cashing a cheque are not the same thing. Cashing a cheque is when you hand a cheque over the counter and get given cash.

You should be able to deposit a Barclays cheque into your RBS account via the Natwest but it's worth checking with your local Natwest first. I have had situations where the Natwest cashier has refused to do this, and others have done it no problem.

I just went to my local Natty and the nice lady at the express till said I just needed a "giro" (a slip from my paying in book) and the cheque would be deposited in my RBS account at no extra charge. Looks like I won't have to make long trips to my nearest RBS branch in future.:)

    Nice

Recently I asked at an Abbey branch if I could deposit into Bradford & Bingley accounts there and they said no - so it isn't the same for all banks with common owners

I believe Natwest and RBS use the same computer system (or have access to each others), same with Bank of Scotland and Halifax. Santander have only recently taken over B&B, so no chance of them having the same computer system.

Don't know if it helps anybody but we have a Virgin One account and can pay cash/cheques into it at our local Nat West.

The real issue here is the clearing used.

You could pay that Barclays cheque into your RBS account at the Barclays branch, using an RBS bank giro credit - just depends on the branch and whether or not they'd take it. But it can be processed and will go through bulk clearing fine.

RBS credits are fine at Natwest for the exact same reason. If you didn't already know, about 80-90% of all UK cheques are cleared through the same company - iPSL. Barclays, HSBC, HBOS, Lloyds, RBS, et al. process their cheques through iPSL.

Is there are standard cost for doing this?
