I am with BT and the speed has been at issue for the past year --we noticed when it rains it's pointless going on line as as it takes an age for it to roll over pages---at other times the service fluctuates. We are on an "up to" 2 contract as far as speed goes--a very clever way to put it as at best we get .7/.8 and more often it runs at .4/.5. I have complained to BT who admit that it is due to the limits of our "local exchange". But I have tried other providers with some of the great deals......none so far, Sky, Virgin and Talk Talk could help with their offers.....they could provide a service but only after adding on a further £9.99 BT line rental
this makes any deal other than my present BT one more expensive and not worthwhile.
I complained repeatedly to BT about their monopoly asking them when they are upgrading the "local exchange". I have asked their customer services repeatedly if they are prepared to waive the line rental with another supplier as their practice is unfair and stifles competition. They have ignored my pleas. I wrote to the Competitions people they said it wasn't their problem and suggested OFCOM.
my current outlay adds up to about £27 pcm rental for my phone and broadband (excluding calls and other items) there are far better deals out there but I seem trapped with BT--can any one help with a solution?

There is certainly nothing wrong with changing your supplier to either of Edingburghlass's suggestions, however the speed issue sounds slightly more sinister and I am a little concerned that you will not see a performance increase under a new supplier. What exactly did BT say was wrong with your broadband line?Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

i was thinking the same as all suppliers will be using the same line to send the bb signal so switching probably wont improve the signal unfortunately0 -
maybe ask what speeds the neibours are getting
at least o2 is cheaper , i signed up for a up to3gb service and i see close to that most of the time and nearly 4gb sometimes lol and im 11km away from the exchange0 -
I'm not sure what your issue is with BT's "monopoly" or why you think they should give you free line rental.
But, if your speed is affected when it rains, you have almost certainly got a fault either on your line or with your house wiring. Focus on getting that resolved, because as others have said, moving to another supplier wont help if you have a fault on the line.0
