We have a huge debt and have had it for years, don't let it get you down, I have had one major breakdown and suffered from depression once since then. This being due to working too hard trying to pay the debt down, since then I have the attitude of I will try and pay down the debt how I can,
but so long as I have my health I am not going to worry about it and not worrying about it ensures this, does the bank manager worry if he or she is going to get the payment, I think not.
It is just not worth it, the bottom line is if all goes pear shaped then I will be bankrupt, and will just have to start again. But in the mean time I will look after my health. To worry about it will only make you ill over time, don't let it grid you down. Have a plan and action it!0 -
Got to nearly 50 years of age and found out partner has 70k of credit card debt. Arranged for pay plan to help us out via citizens advice bureau. I will be 65 before debt is repaid so no hope of ever doing anything but live on minimum amount of money. Anybody else out there in same boat? Any ideas to help me? Some companies offering to settle for 50% but dont know how to find the money upfront. Some days very depressed and scared our home may be re-possesed if we cant make all the payments. Not enough equity in house to cover all debts if we can sell it. Both working 50 hours a week to survive but dont know how long we can keep it up.

Like meny others I recently found this sight after years of ignoring my debt and manageing by robbing peter to pay paul. I would always get this sinking feeling on pay day because I knew I couldn't pay the amounts to my creditors that they wanted.
I was then really stupid an allowed the bank to give me a consolidation loan that I couldn't afford nasty bank.
Now i am taking control and had contacted a debt agency called your clear then after the advice on this sight have now arranged a call back from Pay plan and am not proceding with your clear.
The sinking feeling is receiding but I still wake up in horror at what I have done. I feel ashamed to have so much debt and sick to the stomache when I think that I will probably not own a home in the next 10 years travel or be able to just go shopping.
But well I have my health and friends even if they don't know how badley I am in debt.Light bulb moment Dec 2005

Evening all !
I've been in debt for many years due to credit cards and c loans. Always made the regular payments but I suppose was never really serious about clearing them for good. My lightbulb moment came last year at the age of 42 (finally!!!) and I've taken steps to reduce spending etc but still enjoy my life. My current debts are £18000 and will take 6 years to clear and I'll do it too.
I'd like to think I'd be able to buy my home instead of renting but am realistic in accepting the fact that this might not be possible as I'm also raising one of my nieces which has meant working less hours + less money for another year or two. Can't complain though as we still manage to get out and about and visit friends and family and go on a few trips. My point is try not to let the debt get to you, it's only money after all.
On my 'down' days my treat(s) are a bar of chocolate or a bag of crisps rather than spending 00's on a credit card, fortunately I exercise regularly so it doesn't show on my hips and helps to reduce my 'down' moments!
We will all get there in the end because we now want to which is the best reason of all.The 365 Day 1p Challenge 2025. Member #420 -

drowningindebt - if you start your own thread everyone here will try & help you, you may get a bigger response that way. I really feel for you, lots of people here are in the same boat so you're not alone. You will be asked if you could post your SOA (incomings & outgoings) so people can see where savings could be made & maybe give you a little extra money0 -
To be honest - I don't let it bother me.
My OH used to be resposible for the finances and he worried so much he made himself ill. (It's mostly his debt)
I took over, and am on the way to sorting things out - everything gets paid every month, and we live comfortably. May take a while to pay off, but it's not worth stressing ver.
And anyway - this site has helped me save money in other areas as well. :TCross Stitch Cafe member No. 32012 170-194 2013 195-207.Hello Kitty ballerina 208.AVA 209.OLIVIA 210.ELLA 211.CARLA 212.LOUISE 213.CHARLEY 214.Mother & Child 215.Stop Faffing Completed 2014 216.Stitchers Sampler. 217.Let Them Be Small 218.Keep Calm 219. Reading the posts on this site keeps me on the level, I recently faced up to my 75 K debt mountain that i have built up over the last 8 years , mostly ignoring it . Spending i thought was making me feel good , it took away the ugliness of real life , i have been fighting with post traumatic stress and depression for a while ( diagnosed 3 years ago ) this is when i started to wake up to what i had actually been doing to my life and others , But i made my first payment to CCCs the other day . So things can only get better !! I do still struggle not to spend but its going to be a fight that i win on my terms . Of to Docs Again to day for more treatment exhausting but feels good at the end so has to be good .0

I actually think this site keeps my mind at ease...in the past my debt has been up to £9k. Now it's £1k and not costing me anything in interest.
I was once one of those dumb-dumbs who never thought to shop around for a decent card.
This site has taught be to ban loans for life and to be extremely cautious with credit cards. I always get my limit reduced if I think it's too large to stop me ever being stupid.
That attitude came from discovering this site, so those worrying should always remember that there are many people here willing to listen.0 -
