My internet connection is only 46.6kbps

Please can somebody explain this to me? Why is my internet connection is showing only as 46.6kbps instead of 56k? Is this normal? I have not subscribed to broadband yet, I think, I can geta speed of 512, the slower speed, how do I check the amount of speed my provider will supply. I intend to remain with BTyahoo. Better the devil you know. Thanks

the speed you see is dependent on alot of thing, distance to the exchange, quality of the line and the amount of available bandwidth from the exchange to the internet

I used to get speeds of 44k on dial up but get a 2meg speed now on BT broadband

if you do not use the internet alot then opt for BT's lowest priced option called "Option 1" as you get to keep your dial up email addresses etc.

You already have ample internet protection from reading your other threads so theres no point for paying for BT Yahoos premium offerings just for the protection !!

    currently option 1 is:-

    *£14.99 Via cashback offer:
    - Option 1: £9 will be credited to your first or second bill. Full price £17.99 with Direct Debit otherwise add £1

Put your number into the "Can I get Bordband" box on this page:
    http://www.bt.com/broadband/

It should tell you what speeds your line will be able to manage.

As long as you are getting 44K and above. This is about right for dial up.

I remember years ago only getting around 38K on one computer. I changed a few settings and took the speed up to around the 45K mark. On your speeds, without switching to broadband, I wouldn't expect to be able to tweak the settings to get any more out of it.

The speed my line is able to manage is 256 k or 512 k according to bt broadband. Is it really worthy paying £17.99 to get a speed of 256k? It's not too bad now, the speed has picked up since I got my new computer, it's just downloading takes ages. You can surf the net and download at the same time, right. Is just when I was downloading widowns updates, it took more than 2 hrs and I could not surf the net at the same time. Do you guys install all the updates windows pick up? Thanks

You should be fine with a 512Kb connection. Whether it is worth getting broadband is down to your internet use/circumstances.

    The advantages are................

It will free up your phone line. While you are on the internet, you will not be tying up the phone. You could be talking to someone on the phone at the same time as you are surfing the internet. You will never have an engaged tone while you are on the internet.

Your download speeds on 512Kb would be about 10 times faster than you are used to. What takes you 2 hours to download on dial up should only take about 10/12 minutes with BB.

You need to consider how much you use the net, and how much you are paying for dial up access. There are a few companies offering broadband for less than £15 a month. If you are paying about this sum, it would be worth you considering a switch. The BT price for 512Kb at £17.99 a month is most definately not the cheapest/best deal out there.

    The disadvantages are............

Errrrr..............The price that BT charge for their broadband (not the best deal, or the best company to choose for broadband).
