AOL Question - Change email address to free account?

I wonder if anyone knows the answer to this please. A member of my family has had AOL since the year dot and is paying an extortionate amount of money for the privilege (compared to packages currently available with alternative suppliers). I am helping them switch but they are very attached to their email addresses and would prefer to keep them if possible. I see on the AOL UK website that you can now sign up for free email accounts. Does anyone know if you can convert an email address currently tied to your broadband package to one of their free accounts? (or how quickly an email account/screenname becomes available if you close it)?

Many thanks
