Lucy, seriously, don't worry. People really, really love going to weddings. Don't go into debt over it, but I don't regret a single penny of the money we spent. Go for the stunning venue. We did the best we could at the time and it was great.
I love going to weddings aswell really, just not my own :rotfl:
We live right on the edge of the Cotswolds so are lucky to have lots of stunning venues to choose from really. I'd like it to be quite informal but wondering if a posh venue would be a bit dunno what the word is I'm looking for........"stuffy"!?
I really detest the meet and greet lines aswell, (think it's from when I was a bridesmaid and had to stand in line for AGES) and I am not a hug and kiss sort of person with anyone except OH and our children. I had the idea of doing a prom style thing with a background at the entrance where every guest has their picture taken with their family/partner/on their own or whoever they turn up with, just like they do with school proms, with a big guestbook where people would write their messages in and the photo would go on the page with the message. That way there is no escaping if they have to do it on arrival, people wouldn't be missed off and it would be a nice memory.
Would that be tacky?0 -
It would be lovely. As we didn't have a photographer we forgot about proper photos until the first people started to leave! (Hence I look very happy).
The day was brilliant, marriage is even more fantastic, but I do get slight pangs now when I see bridal magazines. I'm happy we did the best we could, and it was great, but I wish I'd been financially savvy years ago and had saved up since I was 18!:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. think that sounds nice, at the end of it, its yours and your partners day and as long as you enjoy it, sod everyone else, invite the people you both want, if that upsets a few then they'll just have to get over it, i would rather know people are at home moaning about me than have them there and be making me uncomfortable
i should warn you though i am unmarried so this is just from my point of view and going to far too many weddings in the past0 -

There was a person I knew that I really would have liked to invite, but she's always rude about overweight people she doesn't know. I'm overweight but I couldn't have felt comfortable with her there, which was a real shame as there is no way she would have been rude about me, but just the thought added to my worry.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. You do have to pre-book the registry office for the wedding - but other than that all you need are two witnesses. If you wanted to you could simply ask two people off the street.
I have always been of the opinion that a wedding should be what the couple want and not what anyone else in the family thinks they should want. If you want a simple registry office wedding then that is what you should do.

Thank you for your replies, it fills me with confidence that my ideas are ok, and wouldn't be laughed at/frowned upon!!
The only person out of a couple of hundred we wouldn't invite is OH's evil brother, most of his family know some of the reasons I hate him, and I would be more than happy to fill them in afterwards on the latest reasons to hate him if they dared say anything or complained he wasn't there
I think he would well and truly get the picture there is no going back if I don't invite him!!
I think I would get a huge buzz from sending out the "Surprise!" letters and the next day knowing they would be arriving on people's door mats!!0 -
You can ask 2 random people off the street to be your witnesses if you really wanted! - Some registry offices even provide a witnessing service if required (though you do pay for it)If my typing is pants or I seem partcuarly blunt, please excuse me, it physically hurts to type. :wall: If I seem a bit random and don't make a lot of sense, it may have something to do with the voice recognition software that I'm using!0

BTW, my DS (11) was allowed to sign as a third witness - if he'd been a bit older/more mature he could have been a proper witness. He is DH's stepson so it was very important to me that he signed.:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Aaaawwwww. They'd be so cute - you have to have a big wedding - everyone will look at them anyway!:heartsmil When you find people who not only tolerate your quirks but celebrate them with glad cries of "Me too!" be sure to cherish them. Because these weirdos are your true family.0
