Recession busting companies - let's give them all a big thumbs up!

Lets offer our New Year Honours to companies that deserve a thumbs up for value (or perhaps it's only perceived value, but still)

Well tesco's incentive of spend £50+ and get 5p/lite off fuel was a pretty good one during the oil boom we had recently

I'll give honours to Travelodge, Train Saver Tickets and Tesco Vouchers.

We have booked a two night school holiday break in London (for four of us) with breakfast at Covent Garden, Train Tickets from the Westcountry and meal vouchers at Planet Hollywood and The Real Greek. Add to that tesco vouchers for the Original Bus Tour to get us around the sites with the children and to the museums too.

Total cost to us so far - less than £200 (or £50 per person)

I know we have collected vouchers over the years but they are still freebies to us today.

Just a cheap option for the theatre to find now!

Their policy of ruthlessly putting every other business on the planet into administration isn't as appealing though.
  • Not always best value, but John Lewis and M&S are two I'd hate to lose. Hope they stick around.

I wouldn't shed a tear for Currys though. Needed an emergency VGA monitor cable on Monday, and those w*nkers charged £25 for one that had the most appalling signal quality and interference. The very same cable was going for £6 at other online retailers. But I did return it today after it served its purpose :money:

I'm no fan of Tesco, the quality ain't great nor is the price but to be fair there are other factors that put businesses into administration beside them.

Well I have to say that the company I work for is making a profit, is not in any debt, is giving us a pay rise (yippee) BUT is making 10% cutbacks on acquiring new shops, staff, etc.

It's a very uncertain time and I really cannot believe that the bosses of businesses like Woolies and MFI could get things so wrong tbh.

    It's a sad time.

I'll have to nominate HSBC! They are the biggest bunch of robbing b@stards with regards to bank charges! What's their motto? Would it be "f*ck the govt bailout, we'll just just get the bailout direct from our customers"! Now that's what I call recession busting/customer busting!

never had to pay a bank charge myself. but thats probably because i keep an eye on my account so that it never goes out of money and if it did then i would pay the fine for the overdraft. i woulndt crib about the fine because it was not my money to spend if it wasnt in my account in the 1st place. i would get worried if my bank didnt charge people who couldnt be bothered seeing if there was money in their account before they spent the money and expect the bank (ie other savers) to fund their excesses. but fines need to be proportionate and repeat offenders should get higher fines. if it wasnt for the fines then everyone would be welcome to keep going into overdrafts without the overdraft being preapproved. bank charges are a good thing as they keep the system working and a check against people who spend money that is not theirs in the 1st place.
ask any person who works in banks as to how many !!!!!! they get who dont bother to keep funds in the account and spend money they dont have then moan about being hit by bank charges. there is no free lunch. free lunches are what landed the financial system in the doldrums in the 1st place.

I've always found woolies to be totally useless for anything other than nostalgia. Once I grew out of spending my pocket money on a comic and pick n mix I never really found anything to buy in there.
