Contacted BT today to try and save money on two lines that we don't use much by going to light user only to be told they are withdrawing Light User and replacing with BT Basic but this will only be available to people on benefits. What a con!! Yet again BT rips the public off!!!

How is that a con or a rip off?The "Bloodlust" Clique - Morally equal to all. Member 20

Since the BT Light User scheme was for people on low income who needed a phone to stay in contact it sounds like it was the OP who wanted to rip BT off.0

It is indeed, I know a 62 yr old who took early retirement due to ill health never uses the phone except incoming
house outright, private pension tax free @ £400 a month so they are over the Income Support/Jobseekers rate - no Council Tax rebate/DWP benefits
DLA refused
minus council tax £150 ( includes 25% single persons discount )
£250 a month to live on & £15 a month goes to BT as they dont qualify for BT Basic......
Imagine working all your days for 5 years of that ! another 3 years till state pension kicks in....
just aswell they got a winter payment this year, 2/3 their house is tongue & groove
terrible BT get away with no LUS, BT Basic is a joke if you need to make calls - on benefits ? lets just charge 10p a minute....for those whom need to make emergency calls in a quarter could end up finding £10.50 plan cheaper
BT Basic should reduce line rental with no free calls & usual rates...its a sham BT got to use Basic in its product name - its far from BASIC but then BT Extortion does quite have the same ring
BT Basic activation awaiting customer myself, I never use the landline - its there for £5 Orange Broadband Unlimited with free calls to 100 Interntional Countries, 01, 02, 03 UK landlines & Orange mobiles, simply register my Orange second line number with 18185 etc for cheapo mobile calls
so go Basically suck eggs BT I have it well sussed it out ya Bas(ic)TurdsSO... now England its the Scots turn to say dont leave the UK, stay in Europe with us in the UK, dont let the tories fool you like they did us with empty lies... You will be leaving the UK aswell as Europe0 -

Which Orange package is this? Home Max costs £15 per month (if you have an Orange contract) and the free calls are to only 30 countries.0 -

if the poster can afford the luxury of Broadband, i doubt they qualify for BT Basic£4988 Lloyds TSB Mastercard
£400 O/D Lloyds TSB
£2650 Lloyds TSB Loan
£5070 Black Horse Finance
Skint, but I have a plan.... an MSE Plan!!!0 -
BT has now had the universal service obligation removed so LUS and BT basic as well as payphones are all under threat of removal.0

I would say that the threat is here now. Letters and leaflets from BT telling us all about the great new BT Basic tariff are being posted now. Apparently customers don't have to do anything - they will automatically move people to BT Basic. Then you read on and find out that unless you get all these benefits you don't qualify. They go on to say in the FAQ, what happens if I am not eligible for BT Basic? We will offer you many other ways to save money with BT on our other great value plans... or words to that effect. Goodness I ought to get a job at BT marketing.
Anyway, this is pathetic. Now people who don't use the line for outgoing calls cannot get a reduced line rental. My mother is in this catagory, pensioner, no access to job seekers allowance etc (obviously) and now is going to have to fork out much more to have a telephone. Its a scandal. I blame the unfit for purpose government along with their unfit for purpose Ofcom.0 -

No, the Light User scheme was for people that didn't use the phone much and wasn't means tested, nothing to do with low income, just low use.
BT Basic though is a whole different story as it is means tested.0
