new freeview, no signal

Freeview transmitters are running at 50% or lower power at the moment. When your area switches off the analogue signal the digital signal will be put up to 100%
What type of aerial do you have at the moment?
How many horizontal bars (elements) does it have?
The more elements it has the better it can pick up weak signals.
I'm supposedly in a great Freeview area but since i'm on the side of a hill, with the transmitter on the other side, my street can hardly get a signal without a tall aeral.
Yes, in some places a lot lower, in fact in most places a lot lower.
For example Sutton Coldfield, analogue channels broadcast at 1,000kw, digital channels 8kw.It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!(OK my English isn't great, the sciences, maths & IT are my strong points!)0 -

the transmitter is 5 miles from us, we got no signal at all with a set-top box aerial and only got results with a loft aerial and signal booster,

You don't mention which group aerial you should have.
Also not the loft will attenuate the signal, really it should be roof top.
Which way do the elements on your aerial currently point? Maybe your analogue signal is from a relay (vertically), where digital is currently only on the main transmitter. (horizontally). It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Correct, however don't assume that after the digital switchover that this transmitters digital MUX's will then broadcast at 1,000kW.
The digital MUX's will increase their power, but from 8kW to 200kW i.e. 25 times more power than at present. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Correct, after switch over they won't increase to the old analogue levels, as the digital channels can cover similar area on lower power, they will however increase in power as you point out. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Aerial group doesn't come into it - you need a wide-band aerial to cover the whole spectrum.0

Incorrect. Wideband aerials can create more problems than they solve.
In some areas the digital channels are currently out of the analogue band, so you either get a wideband aerial or one that covers the two bands, only get a wideband aerial if you have no choice.
In many areas the digital channels are in the same band as the analogue ones and would be stupid to buy a wideband aerial, when a grouped aerial is fine and is in fact better.
Most areas after switch over which currently have digital channels out of band will be moving those back in band. It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... Is there a website or something with each areas signal strength?
If it's not on that actual site it will be within one of the linked websites

thanks for all the replies,
at the moment it looks like im having the telly instead and my parents will buy "a more expensive telly that will work better"
i have since tried the tv at my house and i can only pick up freeview by adding a separate digi box via a scart,

A more expensive tv will still have the exact same problems:idea:0
