I was concerned about that too, but it seems fairly safe to me. I don't know enough about it to give any guarantees, but the Winamp forums were pretty confident in the security of it. And yes it is free. When it's up and running it's very impressive.
Your PC should run Winamp no problem though, as it is very light in it's use of resources. I have been running it on an older and less powerful system than your own with no problems.
