Are there many shops open on New Years Day?

I want a day off shops for one day off the year. I was shocked to see that our large Asda was opening today. Seriously if peeps can't manage without shops for one day there is something seriously wrong imho.

Every shop is open today, would be stupid not to with so many people off work at home doing nothing with benefits to burn in their pockets !

People who work mon-fri like to use the public hols for shopping & home improvements.
