Are there many shops open on New Years Day?

I believe that all branches of Morrison's and Tesco are closed (aside from petrol stations), but my local Asda is trading on Sunday hours.
Argos are open, again on Sunday trading hours. We have removed your signature - please contact the forum team if you are not sure why - Forum Team0

According to Debenhams website, their store on oxford street in London will be open. Perhaps check the websites of any stores you'd like to visit to see if they have opening hours for the 1st Jan...0

I live in London and back 10 years ago New Years day would be when I would go shopping (I was always tied up on boxing day/the following days until the 31st) and all the stores were open. Infact, the only stores that were not open were the Supermarkets.
I think I would treat it like a bank holiday: most stores are open sunday trading hours, (6 hours) but supermarkets, banks and I think post offices are all shut. Also public transport runs a sunday service.0
