Just to update you that we did indeed complete the next day. Though noone informed us of the completion and we finally had enough at 2 and rang estate agent and they said"Ooooo has noone told you , completion went through at 10am this morning!!" Anyway we are in now! NEVER AGAIN!0

Congrats to OP on a successful move!
I'm not sure what is actually meant by exchange and completion? Why would it be scary to do them at the same time?
We have just received our mortgage offer so things should start moving pretty soon, had the survey and all searches back ok. Any idea how long it will be for us?0 -

me and my other half are first time buyers and were really confused about the whole process extra, when you see a solicitor about the conveyancing then do not be afraid to ask about anything you don't understand
i had a a bit of a pop at my solicitor today as he gave me a lengthy stamp duty form with no guidence notes, i explained that i didn't understand the form and thought it had to be handed in asap to move forward with the purchase to which he said "why would you think that" and i replied "coz i have never bought a house before OKAY"
make sure you ask loads of questions because its better that you understand now rather then thinking oh no laterWell we finally did it got a house not on a main road, next a railway line or any other werid and wonderful things that get on my nerves!!!

An exchange of contracts is when you get the particulars, agree that whats on paper is what you thought you were buying and sign. Once you exchange you cant pull out. Completion is when all the money goes through and you become the owner and can move in. Ideally you leave a period of time between exchanging and completion so as you can book removels time of work etc as before the exchange anything and everything can go wrong.
As for how long it takes from offer to completion, well how long is a piece of string?
My first purchase was 6 weeks, this purchase is around 12 weeks so far. It really all depends on who is on your chain and how fast they are moving things along 0 -
claz it sounds as though your solicitor is lazy. All we had to do was sign the form that the solicitor had completed. She also kept us informed at every stage0
