Due to complete on friday - but haven't exchanged!

I spoke to the solicitor yesterday and asked if we were still on for friday and she said yes, that would be our moving day. SHe planned to exchange today but she hasn't rung me or the estate agent - though I do suppose she may have not told us as communication isn't her strong point.
Is it possible if we haven't exchanged that all will go ahead on friday? Its a small chain- our buyers (FTB) then us and then our property (which is vacant). I am panicing - today the vendors of our new house gave me the keys and let me clean it like mad, the vans are being hired tomorrow night , the kids are going to stay at my mums etc - basically everything is in place . Is it normal to not speak to your solicitor that often over week of exchange/completion? I just feel completely "out of it" - yet when I ring I either feel as though I am pestering her or I dont get a reply at all!
So whadda ya think?!

I would keep on phoning her. Don't feel like you're pestering her, you're paying her to do a job. Even if you have to phone every hour or so. In the end she'll probably sort out the exchange just to get rid of you.
Certainly make sure she tells you why the exchange hasn't happened. Were there any problems that might come up as far as you are aware?
Some people exchange and complete on the same day, so it is possible. I wouldn't want to myself - far too scary!0 -
Your question is how long is a piece of string-you could exchange thur and complete Friday but we have in the past exchanged and completed in an hour but it isn't great.
I would take advice as before and ring -you are only human you do need some notice for removals etc. Our last move was three or four weeks with each Friday as a moving date so push like mad or it all falls down especially as often FTB don't have any great rush. Our last move kept falling down -on purpose I suspect as one in the chain wanted a bank hol so the date moved from easter to 1st may hol to last may hol. so push push push and don't feel one moment of worry about doing so.0 -
Can't beleive your solicitor hasn't told you about the exchange, perhaps it didn't happen? Do not hesitate to call him/her, it is your right to now. How nice of your Vendor to give you the keys to clean the place, not many would do that until completion day. Best of luck!0

Thanks for all your replies. I will take your advice and keep ringing tomorrow - make sure I get hold of her.
Van - we have been really lucky with our seller - he let us in all day to clean - got nearly 10K off the asking price and we gave a load of reasons why - he gave us the money off and fixed all the problems! Our buyers are great too - he is coming round early friday morning to help with his van too and said not to worry if we aren't out in time - he said we can be a couple of days late , its no problem as they are not moving in straight away, have to buy him a pint though!
Fingers crossed with move on friday - this has been going on since september!0 -
That's great that you get on with the people along the chain, now if only your solicitor kept you informed that would be great! Best of luck on Friday, we also found our house in Sept and moved on 21 Dec. Your Buyer sounds really nice too, perhaps you should leave him a card and/or a bottle of wine...0

Yeah we have got them a bottle of bubbly and a card - I just hope I get to give it them on friday!!0

Hope everything went ok abi113.
I read your post and was shocked that people don't know, up until the day before, that they will be moving?
Is this normal or was your situation different abi113? (I've never bought/sold a house before) How on earth do you book removal men, time off work etc.? How much notice do you actually get to organise such things?
I'm already stressed out trying to keep the house tidy for viewers and It can only get worse (the stress not the house!)
