Is 50inch tv a good size tv or is it to small?

  • It will all depend on where you place it in your property & how big your room is. What was the size of your old tv?

Personally i think 37" or 40" is quite sufficient for a tv.

Wouldn't you choose an appropriate size based on the intended viewing distance?

    the single most important thing..

no one cares how big the TV is if the picture looks naff its a waste of money.
The orginal post in this thread has a very very slim chance of being about money saving. The post is more than likely to ask a question that google could answer better than any of us.

Those viewing distances are junk to my mind. Im about 2.8 meters away from my 42" Pioneer, and 99% of the time it looks awesome (the 1% being awful freeview reception)
Its down to how well the tv is set up, how good the tv is, the sources and cables used, and of course the eyesight of the viewer.

    aliEnRIK,

Could we prevail upon you to advise on the subject of HDMI leads, for use with large televisions and HD devices?

There's obviously a lot of stuff out there that is way over the top price-wise.

At what level does useful improvement in picture quality give way to marginal improvement for vastly increased cost?

What would be your recommendation for an HDMI lead that delivers excellent quality to a 50" screen but is not absurdly and unnecessarily expensive?

I bought a couple of £10 leads at Tesco on Boxing Day, just to get some new kit up and running immediately, but obviously I want to invest soon in something that does the job properly and releases the full potential of it.

Your wisdom on this would be much appreciated. :)

    Thanks. :A

When I spoke above I was talking generally about all sorts of things. But as you ask... :p
I can only talk from my own personal experience.
So I STARTED with this ~
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/QED-Performance-Qunex-HDMI-P-1mtr/dp/B000JK8M3I/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1230986590&sr=8-1
The QED was originally 50 quid when they first came out and all I can say is it IS better than a 20 quid 2 m MOLEX hdmi ive also tried. But marginally.
I then bought a CHORD SILVER hdmi. Im unsure how much these are now but it was certainly a clear step up when I tried it with my equipment. Dont ask me why, im still trying what I can to find out. But hopefully a certain hifi magazine will soon be publishing its own 'blind test' results on some of the cables theyve tried.

Without getting into any arguments (Marty ;))
For there to be a reasonable difference a person requires ~
good eyesight (Some of my friends have such bad eyesight, they cant tell the difference between SD and hidef, when it was VERY clear (To me anyways))
A decent LARGE hdtv (Pioneer, Panasonic.....). Anything under 37", you'd struggle to tell any difference.
Clean mains. Some tvs have mains conditioning units builkt in. Some dont. Clearly it makes a difference where you live too.
Decent sources. I can vouch that running a PS3 WITHOUT upscaling on my pioneer looks fantastic (Though this too runs through a mains conditioning unit)

Bad earths can cause interference, as can any electrostatic equipment nearby and the worst (as already mentioned) is mains bourne interference. I personally use an Isotek Sigmas which after a few days running in has sharpened up the picture very well (especially the inbuilt freeview, which at times can look awful)

I know many people have said that theyve tried hdmis and they HAVNT made a difference. I dont know why, but there can be many reasons. but I can vouch that the chord silver CERTAINLY made a difference in MY setup (And a wireworld even more, but you wont by buying one of them im sure :p)

If your unsure, buy the QED. It cant be beat for the price. If you want near perfect quality, go for the chord silver.

Meanwhile. Im going to pressure everyone I can for actual PROOF they make a difference. So I can eventually tell all the none believers to sit down ;)

    Many thanks, aliEnRIK,

I'd found the "What Hi-Fi?" reviews index page for HDMI leads, but was unsure as to whether the item on the Chord lead was now out of date.

I greatly appreciate your advice and will go in search of some Chord leads.

(Looks like it would be well worth while, financially, to relocate the units to within 150 cm of the television rather than fork out for the 300 cm leads! :) )

Incidentally, our small local branch of Curry's - which actually has some very nice, helpful and knowledgeable staff, unlike those at their huge emporium at the out-of-town retail park - has set up an interesting demonstration using two identical large-screen televisions, connected to the same video source but with different HDMI leads, to display the difference in image quality that is obtained.

One lead is a basic £15 lead, the other is a Belkin "Black" lead (costing £68 for 150 cm or £83 for 300 cm). The (apparent) difference is quite striking and it has at least dispelled the scepticism of my companion who had not previously thought I was being sensible in my desire to purchase better than the two £10 leads we bought from Tesco on Boxing Day (on the way home from Richer Sounds) and for which she got Clubcard points!
