Essentially it's better colour quality and sound in the W series. Definitely noticeable IMO.

    difference is,

    KDL40V4000 is hd ready (720p)

    KDL40W4000 is full hd (1080p)

depends whether you have hd sources like blu-ray etc. if you do, go for the W if you don't I would go for the V and save the £200 extra. (i have gone for the KDL32V4000 for my bedroom as i don't really need the full hd in there.

If you are buying the 32" it probably isn't worth paying the extra for the W. If you are buying the 40" it probably is, but only if you will be putting HD sources through it.
Thanks to all who post constructively.

The Sony V-Series are only 720p on sets below 40" - the 40" and above models in the range are full hd 1080p.

There is a slight improvement in sound quality with the W series, but apart from this, the only real noticeable difference is the design - the W series being a slightly glittery midnight blue with a stylish glass bit at the bottom. Not really £200 worth of difference, though.

thanks, hadn't realised that was the case! was only looking at the 32" for myself so assumed it was the case up all the sizes

Does any one think ths tv will go down to £499 as a standard price in late jan feb?

Not likely. The next move in prices will be UP! Check out the value of the pound against the yen now against a couple of months ago. The world thinks our economy is in the toilet (they are not wrong) and so have valued our currency accordingly.

I have been looking at the sony KDL40W4500 (a more recent model) and prices are generally higher now than they were just a month ago despite the so called January Sales. ( I wish I'd bought before Christmas instead of waiting for a better deal.

This is all down to the poor exchange rate. A lot of imported goods are going to RISE in price this year despite what our Government lies to us about inflation!

The 40V4000 is 1080p as well, but uses an 8 bit panel and not a 10 bit panel. The ten bit panel gives better colour.

Also the menu system on the W is the new PS3 style and the Bravia engine is the latest model.

The W may have a game mode.
