Benefits for people with low income

Hi everyone,
I'm new to this site and i hope i've managed to write my query in the right thread.
I live with my partner of 10 years and he is self employed but recently was made bankrupt - I on the other hand work part-time and i earn very little.
We have asked at the housing benefits and they agreed to give us a sum to help us with the housing benefit - however it is not enough and i was wondering if there is a way to claim income support since my husband has not worked now for at least 6 months and i've been the only one bringing in money. Also I will be made redundant very soon from work as they have announced this that after the new year quite a few people will be on the list and i'm one of them.
if anyone could help and advise what other benefits i could apply for i would be most grateful.
thanks

Income support would be affected by your income. Whatever you earn would be taken off the amount. If you earn over £100, there'd be nothing.
Are you claiming working tax credit and have they been informed of the change in income?0 -
You will need to apply for jobseekers allowance as soon as your work finishes tell housing benefit about that when it happens too and you should get an increase in the current payments.
IF your partner cant earn enough money as self employed then he probably shouldnt be doing it (im guessing he went bankrupt because of this?) and should also be looking for more reliable work. When using the housing forum please use the sticky threads for valuable information.0 -

Thanks - yes he went bankrupt because of this - but really there is not much he can do - he is an actor by profession and it's so bad at the moment that any filming jobs don't pay for about 3-6 months, etc and money is so little.
As for myself - i will inform them asap - i work for a governemtn job and you get nothing in terms of perks, etc - money is crap so in a way i'm glad to be made redundant.:j Meduza0 -

He should realise he has bills to pay like everyone else does and that chasing his dream of being an actor and frankly failing isnt working he needs to wise up. Its fine him continuing this but on a part time basis the rest of the time he should be doing agency work and temporary contracts doing anything and everything to earn cash while he waits for a job to further his acting career its the only sensible option. When using the housing forum please use the sticky threads for valuable information.0 -

Oh but he does - he does maintenance work, but even that - everyone wants things for nothing.
I think you misunderstood me - he's not one to stay at home waiting for work, etc or pursuing a dream - he also teaches - but again no one has any money to spend. And let's be honest - what jobs are there? most of the emplyers are offering nothing - for example i speak two languages fluent - but everyone expects me to translate for nothing and to register as an interpreter costs over £1,000.:j Meduza0 -

You work in a government job and you're being made redundant? Don't hear that very often. Can't they move you to a different dept where you could go full-time? To be honest, if you work for the government, they should get someone to check with DWP exactly what you need to do.Fokking Fokk!0 -

If you are willing to do anything, there are plenty of jobs available. McDonalds, Homebase, Tesco - there is no shame in working at any of these places if it means keeping a roof over your heads.Gone ... or have I?0 -
yeah, they're run out of jobs lol - and other departments are full - besides to change to another are you must go through the job interviews, etc.:j Meduza0

You should be grateful to be given some benefits rather than moan its not enough, some countries dont have that luxury.
Your OH needs to foeget acting and look for any type of work, like DMG says there are jobs out there.0 -

I wasn't moaning thanks - and if you want to have a digg go and find someone else love - my OH is working much more than most of you. Why is it that we al have to be like robots and work 9 to 5? go and get a life.
By the way acting is a proper job which uses loads of skills not like most paper pushers who look busy doing nothing and ticking boxes.:j Meduza0
